What is Dante and Why is it So Popular?

A new network protocol called Dante is gaining momentum as a time saving, turnkey solution for digital A/V installations.

One of the hottest technologies to hit the commercial electronics industry in the past decade is the Dante protocol.

Developed by the international company Audinate, the Dante platform was engineered to provide the professional A/V market with a turnkey architecture to support digital audio and video device interoperability over a standard Ethernet-based network.

Dante incorporates the ability to support as many as 512 bidirectional audio channels, as well as other standards such as Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Dante’s history dates back to 2006 when Australia’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre of Excellence formed Audinate after recognizing the potential of the platform. Today with 150 OEM manufacturer partners adopting the technology, dealers have a range of solutions from top brands to choose from to assemble state-of-the-art digital A/V systems.

Brands include Kramer Electronics, Audio Technica, Bose, Crestron, Biamp Systems, Harman, Lab.gruppen, Peavey, Presonus, Sennheiser, Soundcraft, Solid State Logic, Sound Devices, Shure, Vue Audiotechnik, Studio Technologies, and Yamaha.

“This is another significant milestone for Audinate as a company,” says Lee Ellison, CEO of Audinate, reflecting on Kramer becoming the 150th licensee of Dante. “Audinate’s focus on innovation, high interoperability, easy integration, and unsurpassed performance have all directly influenced our rapid business growth and we look forward to continuing this trend.”

The adoption of the technology has increased by 50 percent over the past year alone, and the company sums up the platform by saying it provides the professional A/V market with a low-latency, plug-and-play platform that is widely recognized and easy-to-use.

Audinate is a member of the AVnu Alliance, and it has offices in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
