7 Eye Catching NHL Ice Projections

NHL teams like the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers use 3D projection mapping to create stunning pregame shows throughout the 2014 playoffs.

A few weeks ago, we watched a basketball court projection show that included stunning 3D projection mapping effects.

Not surprisingly, any space with a flat surface can be a great setting for a giant projection screen, especially a 200’ by 85’ white sheet of ice.

The NHL playoffs are underway, as are some amazing projection shows by the teams themselves.

A combination of 3D mapping techniques and high resolution video content is used again and again to create enormous display presentations, from pregame shows to season openers. The trick is to pixelate the surface of the rink, and then use that as a canvass to project video clips and 3D imaging.

From Tampa Bay to Canada, NHL AV crews are producing such gawk-worthy 3D projection, sometimes including high-definition video display screens above the ice as well and at times even involving the players.

The Tampa Bay Lightning is the latest team to use projection mapping, pairing excellent visual effects with live DJs to complete this playoff pregame show at the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this April. The show includes the national anthems of the United States and Canada.

The Montreal Canadiens wow audiences with a combination of large-scale display screens atop the Bell Centre and ice projection effects. Clear, high-resolution video is a big part of this pregame show, suggesting impressive projection technology.
