The Sunnyvale, Calif.,-based non-profit, mutual-benefit corporation HDMI Forum, Inc., has introduced the latest version of the HDMI format: HDMI 2.0a.
According to the HDMI Forum, the specification has been updated to enable the transmission of high-dynamic range (HDR) content, which provides enhanced picture quality through its ability to deliver increased color capabilities and contrast levels.
The update is now available to current HDMI 2.0 Adopters via the HDMI Adopter Extranet.
“We recognized that HDR would be a critical features as the industry evolves. Our support for HDR enables our 800-plus HDMI 2.0 Adopters to develop market leading products that include HDR, and [the update] will maintain interoperability across the entire HDMI ecosystem,” states Robert Blanchard, president of the HDMI Forum, Inc. “Along with the publishing of the CEA extensions, the HDMI Forum continues to update the HDMI Specification and [it] remains closely aligned with leading CE [consumer electronics] standards organizations.”

Citing the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) 861.3 new HDR Static Metadata Extensions that were recently published, the HDMI Forum points out that it is providing the electronics industry with the latest technologies to support the latest movies, TV shows and music.
“By adding HDR, the HDMI Specification continues its history of supporting the latest formats and technologies planned for Hollywood content,” explains Arnold Brown, chairman of the HDMI Forum, Inc., board of directors.
