It’s not quite as impressive as the real Great Wall of China, but it’s safe to call the innovative teaching theater at elite Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) the “Really Good Wall of China”—or the “Great Video Wall of China.”
Under the direction of HUST, Christie and local partner Chess Computers installed the Visdec Electronic Decision Theater at the university with a 240-degree, floor-to-ceiling curved advanced visualization display, all in one piece.
It is the largest such installation in China and one of the biggest in the world—8 feet high.
The theater was built for about 25 people to sit and about 40 people, including standing room. To accommodate the new approach, Christie turned to Stewart Filmscreen to supply 65 feet of material, which had to be shipped to China for the job.
The system is an RP cylindrical display with about 65 feet of screen surface width and eight active stereo Christie Mirage HD6 projectors fed by a Christie Spyder X20 video processor. The system fulfilled HUST officials’ desire to construct a first-rate platform for scientific and technological innovation and enhance its scientific research capability.
Christie rented an aircraft hangar for staging the project in the winter of 2010, but was still only able to fit four projectors in the building. The third-floor installation was also a significant challenge in a job that was seemingly full of them, says Larry Paul, senior director of technology and visualization solutions management at Christie.
