Cisco, Riedel and TC Group were among the key technology suppliers for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which came to a triumphant conclusion on Sunday August 3 with a Closing Ceremony featuring performers as diverse as Australian pop superstar Kylie Minogue and acclaimed Scots-Gaelic singer Karen Matheson.
Integral to the AV production of the entire 11-day tournament was Sports Technology, which held responsibility for the supply, installation and operational support of large video display screens and public address & audio systems across many of Glasgow 2014’s competition and non-competition venues throughout the entire 11 days of competition.
Communications giant Riedel was another key project partner, supplying all radio comms systems and services for the entirety of the Games. Riedel designed a radio comms solution for use across Glasgow and at the 14 venues hosting 17 different sporting competitions. The company provided all radio handsets and radio communication accessories, including more than 6,000 radios, used in the lead-up to and during the Games, along with a terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) digital network and a Motorola MOTOTRBO digital radio repeater system.
With this communications infrastructure, Riedel ensured outdoor street-level coverage at all official venues, throughout the city of Glasgow, and along the official cycling road race and marathon routes, as well as indoor coverage at Glasgow 2014 competition venues. Riedel also supplied the radio communications solution for the Scottish leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay.

Networking giant Cisco also played a pivotal role in Glasgow 2014. As the tournament’s Official Network Infrastructure Supporter, Cisco provided a secure and robust network infrastructure, enabling the connection of data, voice, video and devices. Cisco solutions specified for the Games included a network consisting of 2,300 IP phones, 441 switches, 378 access points, 16 routers, 15 digital media players, 14 ace load balancers and eight firewalls.
Full details of the individual AV systems used in each of the tournament venues have yet to emerge, but TC Group has just revealed that the Commonwealth Games/Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome featured a combination of Tannoy VQ loudspeakers powered by Lab.gruppen PLM amplifiers.
