Analog or digital? Digital or analog? Or both?
These days, it’s a question many commercial security clients are asking themselves as they weigh changes to their systems and their new system options. While most manufacturers are now leaning more in the direction of digital, they also have realized the appetite for change isn’t quite as strong as they initially had hoped.
That’s meant savvy companies producing hybrid versions and, in some cases, offering both pure digital and pure analog versions. While it’s a lot of production, it’s necessary to satisfy customers.
At ISC West 2011 in Las Vegas in early April, the transition from analog to digital was a major topic of conversation among manufacturers as they look to the future and try to keep up with demand.

“It’s all about IP,” says Scott Harkins, president of Honeywell Systems, noting the company has recently released a family of HD cameras that work in low-light areas. “Analog is still the dominant player, because the industry hasn’t found a way to unlock IP. That time has finally come.”
The MAXPRO NVR family of hybrid analog/digital security cameras ranges from entry-level (XE) to mid-level (SE) to high-end (PE). It takes “six clicks to set up” the cameras, Harkins says, and the system is scalable up to thousands of cameras.
