Last year, CI uncovered the beauty and excitement of the world’s largest light festival, Vivid Sydney.

The two-week festival returns to the Australia coast this May, running from May 22 to June 8, for its seventh year. Every night, from 6 p.m. to midnight, Sydney Harbor transforms into the Light Walk, an illuminated tour of the city showcasing several artists’ light installations and mapped projection onto Sydney’s iconic buildings.

“Vivid Sydney is a unique celebration of light, music and ideas that will see the vibrant capital transformed by a series of state-of-the-art visual and creative art installations,” says Anthony Bastic, festival director.

This year, one of those iconic buildings that have become the backdrop for art projection is the Sydney Opera House. This is not the first time this architectural masterpiece has been used as a canvas for this kind of art. Earlier this year, the Opera House was featured in Visions of Vienna, a multi-media concert including visual art and live music by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

In preparation for this year’s Vivid Sydney, Universal Everything transformed the Sydney Opera House into a “Living Mural” of projection from the other side of the harbor.

The multi-disciplinary design studio drew inspiration from early artists and animators Len Lye, Norman McLaren and Walt Disney to project a “digital whirl of color” onto the sails of Australia’s artistic icon.
