Sennheiser MobileConnect Uses Wi-Fi to Deliver Assistive Listening

Sennheiser's MobileConnect can be used in higher education, K-12 or even digital signage applications as an assistive listening aid.

Bringing assistive listening to a wider range of users, Sennheiser’s MobileConnect utilizes Wi-Fi to deliver audio content to students’ cell phones.

The company says MobileConnect is a good BYOD solution for integrators working in classrooms, whether it’s in higher education or K-12.

“MobileConnect is a disruptive solution that elegantly rethinks accessibility,” explains Xenios Maroudas, portfolio manager of business communication, Sennheiser. “MobileConnect utilizes existing network technologies and a ‘bring your own device’ approach. This system thus reduces the total cost of ownership for organizations such as universities by removing barriers to being able to offer a genuinely practical to the needs of hearing impaired students.”

How Sennheiser MobileConnect Works

Sennheiser explains that its MobileConnect assistive listening solution features the ConnectStation streaming server. Described as the heart of the MobileConnect system, Sennheiser says the system produces latency-free multichannel audio streaming via Wi-Fi in auditoriums, classrooms, theaters, gymnasiums and wherever Wi-Fi is available to students.

Convenience is a big part of it, says Sennheiser. Students can use their choice of smart phone or tablet and headlines to listen to audio via the MobileConnect app, which is free to download on both iOS and Android.

The MobileConnect app is engineered to improve speech intelligibility and overall sound quality, including options that amplify the dynamic range of high- and low-frequencies.

Digital Signage Applications

Integrators could also deploy Sennheiser’s MobileConnect as a complementary system to digital signage, as MobileConnect provides assistive listening, audio descriptions and simultaneous translation to video displays.

Sennheiser adds that it collaborated on the features built into the MobileConnect system with the experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology.
