The post Dante Shines at TsingHua University in China appeared first on Commercial Integrator.

]]>
Established in 1911, TsingHua University in northwest Beijing has a combined student population of over 50,000, with 21 schools and 59 departments encompassing science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. The School of Economics & Management (SEM) was founded in 1984. Over the past 40 years, Tsinghua SEM has maintained its China leadership in talent training, scientific research, social influence, and international exchanges, and has made continuous efforts to build a world-class school of economics and management. When constructing a new academic building, TsingHua University turned to Dante to fulfill its extensive audio needs.

The teaching areas in the new building include 23 multimedia classrooms, 14 standard classrooms, and more than 40 seminar rooms. Approximately 700 Dante-supported devices are installed to support the school’s audio needs. This makes it the most extensive network-based audio system in mainland China.

“It was a prospective decision to choose to use the Dante Networking system in our new building,” says HongGang Zhao, head of multimedia at TsingHua University’s School of Economics and Management. “It gives us lots of flexibility. As quick as a new idea comes, it will help us to make it happen.”

Dante is a complete AV-over-IP platform that allows audio, video, and control data to be transported over standard 1Gb Ethernet networks. Supported in over 3,800 Dante-enabled products from more than 550 manufacturers, Dante replaces point-to-point analog and digital connections with software-based IP routing, allowing users to send AV channels anywhere on the network with perfect digital fidelity.

Outfitting the University Building

The project team selected the Dante-enabled BSS BLU-806DA for audio processing throughout the building. The BSS DSP features a low latency, fault-tolerant digital audio bus of 256 channels and four card slots for custom I/O configurations of analog, digital and telephony cards.

The team also selected Dante-enabled Shure ULX-D wireless microphones for larger classrooms. With this, they could provide better audio coverage and consistent sound during lectures. Dante AVIO USB adapters were also included in the classrooms to allow students and instructors to connect any computer to a Dante network with zero software installation. This made it ideal for remote instruction and conferences.

Device management and monitoring requirements were paramount, with approximately 700 Dante products on the network. Thus, the project team implemented Dante Domain Manager, a server-based software solution that provides a centralized view of the entire deployment. The software allows the team to divide the system into groups to manage broadcast traffic more efficiently on the computer network and improve maintenance efficiency. Through a centralized view, the team receives alerts when issues arise in the system. Then, they can access the system from anywhere, determine the problem and solve it remotely.

Ensuring Continued Success

“Dante Domain Manager with its API has been straightforward for us to use,” adds Zhao. “With the ability to see all the devices at once on the network, it’s easy to monitor and manage our systems. Sitting in the control room, we can identify the system issue remotely in advance, this allows us to work more efficiently and keep our classrooms operating smoothly.”

The school recognizes the importance of network multimedia technology in the future of smart classrooms in higher education. With the growing adoption of related technologies, such as the cloud, big data and AI; the school hopes to seamlessly connect new technologies in the future to the Dante platform to expand teaching capabilities for staff and students alike.

Super Bowl LVIII Relies on Shure For Clear Sound https://www.commercialintegrator.com/news/super-bowl-lviii-relies-on-shure-for-clear-sound/ https://www.commercialintegrator.com/news/super-bowl-lviii-relies-on-shure-for-clear-sound/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2024 20:36:05 +0000 https://www.commercialintegrator.com/?p=128902 Engineers and sound techs relied on Shure Axient Digital, PSM 1000 and other patented Shure microphone technology for Super Bowl LVIII.

The post Super Bowl LVIII Relies on Shure For Clear Sound appeared first on Commercial Integrator.

]]>
For the first time in history, the biggest game in American Football descended upon Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium. This presented a massive new challenge: managing the Super Bowl’s immense production in Las Vegas’ already crowded wireless radio frequency (RF) environment. An expert production crew fearlessly tackled this challenge and delivered an outstanding entertainment experience to all attendees and a staggering 202.4 million broadcast viewers. To ensure the highest-quality audio for the entire Super Bowl, the production team trusted the Shure Axient Digital Wireless Microphone System.

Shure at the Super Bowl

“Axient Digital is the key to the Halftime Show,” shares Lead RF Engineer Cameron Stuckey. “We are using every feature that sets it apart to the fullest extent possible. And, at this point, it is hard to picture how I would design the wireless system without it. The coverage of Quadversity, combined with the reliability of Frequency Diversity, means the team and I can support every artistic decision across an entire football field with confidence in the harshest environment of the year.”

The RF team depended on 10 AD4Q Four-Channel Digital Wireless Receivers; an AD600 Axient Digital Spectrum Manager; and two AXT400 Axient Dual Channel Receivers. For another year, ATK also used Axient Digital AD4Q with Quadversity, a patented Shure technology, thus leveraging four simultaneous RF inputs to feed a single RF channel.

ATK Audiotek and Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) handled all wireless microphones and IEM systems for the pre-game entertainment, halftime entertainment, and referees. This is the 27th year PWS has served as ATK’s wireless partner for the Super Bowl.

The Audio Team at Super Bowl

The team included Broadcast Mixer Tom Holmes, Entertainment Front of House Mixer Alex Gussard, Entertainment Front of House Music Mixer Dave Natale, Monitor Mixer Tom Pesa, Lead RF Engineer Cameron Stuckey, and RF Techs Gary Trenda and Kasey Gchachu. The RF Team Lead for CP Communications was Loren Sherman. The production was also made possible by a crew of A2s.

Michael Mason, president of CP Communications, worked with his team to supply 45 channels of Axient Digital wireless and 14 channels of Shure PSM 1000 In-Ear Monitoring Systems. These were used for the pre-half and post-game studio shows as well as in game reports from the sidelines. Mason also made a point to note that Shure equipment was not only present for the big game; but for studio shows around Las Vegas during pre-week as well the Opening Night, Red Carpet and Honors shows.

Relying on Shure

“At CP Communications, we continue to rely heavily on the Shure Axient Digital series of microphones and Shure PSM to bring the highest-quality RF experience to our broadcast partners,” shares Mason.

“Shure at the Super Bowl has been a standard for entertainment for many years,” adds Tom Pesa, monitor mixer. “Shure began outperforming others years ago on this event, most notably in the wireless in-ear department. Just speaking in terms of the monitor team, there is no room for failure when moments such as the National Anthem or The Super Bowl Halftime Show are being viewed by record-setting audiences worldwide… The standard is Shure PSM 1000 for ears and, from a sound standpoint, nobody argues about how good they sound and how widely used they are.”

He continues, “Topping it all off, in monitor world, is the utilization of Wireless Workbench to constantly monitor wireless in-ears as well as all of the Shure microphones to gauge metering, RF status, and an array of other details since the actual RF equipment lives and is managed by the RF team away from monitor mix. All of these Shure products, seamlessly working together, is a massive part of the success of the audio team at the Super Bowl each year.”

Ensuring Flawless Performances

According to Shure, before kickoff, Reba McEntire trusted Shure Axient Digital for her live performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Here, McEntire used a frequency diversity handheld microphone transmitter outfitted with a nickel-plated KSM11 capsule. The accompanying drumline was also relying on Axient Digital transmitters.

“Shure KSM series capsules are perfect for every type of singer, and for me, the KSM9 and KSM11 are my go-to favorites for wireless vocals. Clear, crisp, and just the right amount of rejection without getting too ‘spitty’ sounding,” says Tom Holmes, broadcast mixer. “They [Shure] have a great range of mics suitable for every application.”

Andra Day’s rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was performed on Shure Axient Digital Frequency Diverse (FD) wireless transmitters. Also, Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers accepted the Walter Payton Man of the Year award with an Axient Digital transmitter and KSM9 microphone capsule.

Every handheld transmitter on stage during the Halftime Show was Axient Digital (ADX2 / ADX2FD) and nearly every performer featured new, patented Shure microphone technology. For headsets, multiple artists used Axient AXT100 bodypacks. One of these artists was H.E.R., who used AXT100 for her headset and guitar. She also relied on a new Shure microphone technology for her onstage appearance.

A Long-Lasting Relationship

Referees also used two Axient Digital ADX1 bodypack transmitters working together in Frequency Diversity mode and paired with Shure’s premium subminiature TL47 model TwinPlex omnidirectional lavalier microphones. While omnidirectional lavaliers are typically used in controlled audio environments like theaters; TwinPlex was uniquely suited for this stadium application, given the lavalier microphone’s ultra-pristine, natural response and off-axis consistency, says Shure. Meanwhile, the CBS broadcast relied on ADX2 transmitters and Shure Mic Flag Extenders.

“I always enjoy collaborating with the artist teams who work diligently to find the right technology for talent,” adds Jenn Liang-Chaboud, manager of Entertainment Relations, at Shure. “It’s truly a mutually beneficial relationship. Their insights and feedback help make our products better.”

“From the sounds of the game to the entertainment and everything involved with the broadcast, the Super Bowl is a tour de force of audio production and wireless management,” states Nick Wood, senior director, Professional Audio Products, at Shure. “Shure is honored to be a part of it and grateful for the trust of the many amazing professionals who make it work each year.”

Origin Acoustics is launching Origin PRO, a new line of commercial-grade speakers and amplifiers derived from the company’s success in the residential market, taking the same feature-rich approach and design aesthetic to the commercial market.

Originally announced back in August 2023, a complete product line of high-performance Origin PRO speakers is now available in three versatile form factors — in-ceiling, surface mount, and pendants — in three sizes, 5-, 6- and 8-inch, as well as an 8-inch subwoofer for in-ceiling and pendant options.

All Origin PRO models, available now, include certifications required by the commercial installation market.

Additionally, Origin PRO in the second quarter of 2024 is launching a new line of full-matrix DSP-enabled amplifiers designed for commercial projects that require top-line reliability, efficiency and flexibility.

The company says these commercial-grade amplifiers allow for 2- and 4-channel options with power output ranging from 60W-750W per channel, and power both low-impedance and 70v/100v speakers.

Origin PRO Amplifier Features

The Origin PRO amplifiers will be available in 2U and 1U half-rack versions. According to the company, 2U full-rack amplifiers deliver reliable total system power of 1000W, 1500W, 2000W and 3000W.

Meanwhile, the 1U ultra-compact, half-rack amplifiers offer a space-saving solution when high-output is needed in challenging installations with total system power ranging from 125W-500W. Automatic power sharing technology in the 60W and 125W amplifiers proportionally distributes power in both Lo-Z and Hi-Z and provides flexibility in system configuration, the company says.

In addition, Origin PRO amplifiers with the Dante networked audio protocol will be available for large-scale, professional projects that require low latency and system-wide synchronization, such as concert venues, open-air shopping malls and houses of worship.

Dante converges all connection types into one that is managed with software, allowing for creative design flexibility and expandability, seamless integration with other technologies and reduced equipment costs.

Origin Acoustics also provides an intuitive web app built into all Origin PRO Amplifiers for easy system setup and customization by delivering DSP configuration options and tuning features, including multi-zone setup, input mixing, priority and ducking, restriction, input and output EQ, S/PDIF output routing, high-pass filter, speaker presets, delay, Sine generator and more.

The amplifiers also offer custom-made drivers for the most widely specified control and automation system brands, including Control4, RTI, Symmetrix, QSC, AMX, Crestron and Elan.

Gerald Ivar ‘Jerry’ Williams, a visionary and pioneer in the field of assistive listening technology, passed away on November 30, 2023, at the age of 96. A native Minnesotan, Williams’ journey into the world of electronics began during World War II when he enlisted in the Navy and served as an Electronic Technician’s Mate aboard the USS Artemis. The rapid technological advancements in electronics during the war ignited Williams’ passion for the field, setting the stage for a remarkable career.

After graduating with an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota, Williams made significant contributions to the rapidly developing electronics industry. He played a pivotal role in developing color TV receivers for Zenith and was part of the team that developed the UNIVAC File Computer at Engineering Research Associates. In 1958, Williams co-founded Transistor Electronics Corp, where he designed and manufactured computer displays. His journey continued at Control Data, where he served on the technical management staff until 1979. By the time he left Control Data, Williams held seven patents covering a variety of digital data displays, electrical circuit switching and signal controls.

Crafting Innovative Listening Solutions

However, Williams enduring legacy lies in the company that bears his name and the products he created. In the mid-1970s, prompted by a request from his pastor to help those with hearing loss in the congregation, Williams conceived a revolutionary wireless listening system – The Personal PA Broadcasting System. By broadcasting the service from an AM radio transmitter, listeners with a pocket radio receiver and earphones could sit anywhere they chose, control their own volume and hear the service directly without background noise. However, the FCC issued revisions in 1975 that limited the power of unlicensed low-frequency transmitters. With two trips to the FCC, Williams negotiated a nationwide frequency for hearing assistance transmitters to operate with increased power.

Williams and his wife, Lorraine, established Williams Sound Corp. in 1976, which is dedicated to providing solutions for people with hearing loss. Following the Personal PA, Williams next innovation was a personal amplifier called the Pocketalker, which established the Assistive Listening Device, or ALD market. Per Williams AV, since 1982, the Pocketalker remains the leading product in the ALD marketplace and has helped millions of hard-of-hearing people worldwide, including veterans who suffered hearing loss. Throughout the years, Williams commitment to aiding those with hearing loss led Williams Sound to continue to trailblaze the AV industry’s assistive listening space. He introduced groundbreaking FM radio and Infrared assistive listening products with features such as multi-channel operation and frequency agility.

Williams AV: A Legacy of Innovation, Quality & Compassion in the AV Industry

Apart from technical innovations, Williams also established a unique culture that lives on at Williams AV. His deep faith guided him to create a work environment that was family-oriented, professional and respectful, with a strong service orientation. A servant leader, Williams fostered a “Golden Rule” approach within the company and especially with customers that lives on today.

Williams retired from Williams Sound in 1987, but his passion for helping others persisted. Even in retirement, he generously volunteered his expertise to enhance the sound systems of local churches and mentored aspiring audiovisual and recording professionals.

Nearly 50 years since its inception, Williams Sound, now Williams AV, remains dedicated to ensuring public spaces are accessible, with assistive listening products at the core of its business. Moreover, the company has broadened Williams goal of enhancing communication through assistive devices for language interpretation, wireless intercom, guided tours and entertainment. Today, the company’s products are available in more than 60 countries, expanding Williams vision to connect people through improved communication.

The name Williams has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and customer service, a testament to the strong foundation Williams built. His legacy lives on in the millions of lives touched by Williams Sound products and his ongoing pursuit of excellence, which the company continues today. Williams will be remembered as a visionary founder, technical pioneer and compassionate leader whose impact will continue to reverberate through the decades.

Extron announced the immediate availability of the CA 163, an easy-to-install column array speaker, designed to combine excellent speech intelligibility, a contemporary aesthetic, and integration-friendly mounting options. Per the company, two mounting systems are also available to accommodate different room layouts and sizes. Ideal for acoustically challenging environments, it features a focused vertical dispersion that efficiently directs sound to listeners instead of reflective ceilings or floors. Available in paintable black or white, the CA 163 is an integration-friendly solution for ambient environments, says Extron.

“One of the most frequent requests we’ve received has been for an Extron column array speaker,” remarks Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “Our engineers set out to design a new solution that not only looks as great as it sounds, it’s also extremely easy to install. We are very excited to expand Extron speaker offerings into the larger applications served by the CA 163.”

The wall mounting system enables one person to mount the CA 163 to the wall securely, says Extron. Additionally, it features a wall-mounting template that makes it quick and easy to accurately position the speaker mounts. After installing the mount, a slot on the rear of the speaker allows it to slide up and down to the desired height.

The CA 163 PT includes a pan-and-tilt mount for maximum speaker aiming flexibility; while the CA 163 LP includes a low‑profile mount for minimal protrusion from the wall.
