]]>
Commercial buildings must unceasingly advance to meet user demands and the growing volume of technology needed to provide state-of-the-art functionality and technological benefits. The commercial building market is growing steadily, along with the size of individual buildings, directly increasing the need for always-on, full-coverage connectivity to service-connected devices and to manage energy consumption.

Beyond the commercial building itself, many of the elements of a smart building have now extended to the parking facility. Parking facilities have evolved from simple concrete structures that only need to consider the distance from a building’s entrance, to more complex structures that need to incorporate safety, security, access control, sustainable lighting, communications, Internet of Things (IoT) enablement and electrification for electric vehicle (EV) charging.

We will focus on three elements of the commercial building and associated parking facilities that must be considered to ensure a future-ready, IoT-enabled smart building: sustainability initiatives, infrastructure and technology. Integrators should have a solid understanding of all three of these elements to create smarter outcomes for their customers – the building owners and operators.

Due to rapidly changing demands around connectivity, data usage, health and safety needs, as well as concern for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments, commercial building owners are looking to integrators to help them establish future-forward sustainability initiatives to meet their customers’ expectations.

Having determined sustainability initiatives alongside building owners, the integrator can design a well-planned infrastructure layer, which is perhaps the most critical step for a successful, future-ready smart building. Knowing that the infrastructure for your smart building project must be efficient, robust and reliable in order to support the technology and applications needed today, it also ensures reliable performance and scalability for the digital innovations of tomorrow.

With a future-ready infrastructure layer in place, integrators can then implement the technologies and systems for a future-ready solution to achieve the sustainability initiatives for their customers through improved building efficiency.

These efficiencies offer cost reduction on utilities, maintenance, operations and waste management, and can simplify operational processes and automations to provide for increased productivity and labor savings. Ultimately, each of these three key aspects leads to greater operational and budgetary efficiencies, which provide greater ROI while improving the built environment to meet and exceed customer expectations.

Commercial Buildings: Technology & Infrastructure

Smart buildings are no longer a trend, they are an expectation. Within the commercial building, technological advances and IoT enablement improve operations of environmental controls, lighting, safety and security – all with positive implications on sustainability initiatives. And the development of the connected ceiling has led to an entire ecosystem directly above our heads that enables not just lighting, but access points and a multitude of devices.

Technology and data are driving the need for a more robust and resilient infrastructure with more power, higher bandwidth and extended distances within buildings and their parking facilities. As IoT increases and more devices are introduced to the commercial building environment, businesses are combining disparate building systems into a converged infrastructure. Converged infrastructures work to optimize building systems, operations and maintenance. All of this leads to greater opportunities for integrators to provide more for their customers, while increasing share of wallet.

This makes the relatively small increase for your customers in upfront infrastructure investment an obvious decision. Having an infrastructure capable of supporting these escalating bandwidth needs throughout multiple generations of technology – without having to upgrade the cabling infrastructure in the middle of its lifecycle – provides a cost savings for the building owner and allows for more device installations down the road for the integrator.

Sustainability

Sustainability is an outcome delivered by the efficiencies from a future-ready infrastructure and new technologies from IoT enablement. But sustainability initiatives are also considered a leading factor to your customers for both the cost-saving benefits and as an environmental necessity.

Sustainability initiatives must be planned for to promote a healthier built environment, but they also create a positive position for investors, tenants and occupants who place an emphasis on green initiatives. Sustainability initiatives will vary for every commercial building owner and operator, but no matter where they are in the sustainability journey, it’s imperative for integrators to discover those sustainability strategies so they can plan the project accordingly.

With a growing demand for buildings that can enhance energy efficiencies, improve the occupant experience and show themselves to be sustainable, there are clear benefits to embracing a smart, future-ready commercial building. But sustainability is more than a buzzword, it’s an opportunity to lower costs, innovate, build more resilient operations and make a positive impact. From the board room to the plant floor, companies are rethinking how they impact people, society and the world by achieving sustainability goals.

A Future-Ready Solution

Future-readiness may be summed up as the ability to prepare for what could be, without the knowledge of what that might be. In the early days of the cellular phone, no one could have dreamed of the vast numbers of abilities and applications that are now standard. The same is true for commercial buildings. No one could foresee the emergence and demand for healthier indoor environments or a distributed workforce with newly created needs for virtual and on-site collaboration. IT/OT convergence, IoT enablement and digital transformation may well be in their infancy, with new requirements appearing seemingly on a daily basis.

The successful deployment of a smart building depends on the elements of infrastructure, technology and sustainability working together and building upon each other to create smarter outcomes for building owners, occupants and visitors. The integrator must be a steward of the industry by not only providing current technologies but also educating customers about future-ready infrastructure and staying abreast of new technology selections.

In the wake of recent global events, emergency response has become a focal point for businesses and municipalities alike. The trend toward creating more sophisticated and connected operations centers continues at a pace. In the Philadelphia area, this trend is driving organizations to invest in advanced audiovisual solutions to benefit control rooms of all sizes and scale.

Videowalls play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between data and decision-making in emergency operations. This technology ensures that every piece of crucial information is presented in a visually compelling manner, enhancing situational awareness and response capabilities.

With many 4K and HD video sources to view and manage, reliable control room technology is paramount to smooth operations in often mission-critical environments, as R.T. Chalfant, integration sales account manager at the Downingtown, Penn.-based, Haverford Systems, explains, “Staying ahead in emergency response is not just a priority; it’s a necessity. As businesses and organizations strive to enhance their operational efficiency, the integration of cutting-edge technologies becomes a pivotal strategy.”

Control Concepts, Inc., the Fairfield, N.J.-based, software developer, announced the expansion of its Control Concepts Supported Product program with the addition of Lutron, Nureva, Panasonic Connect, Smart Monkeys and SurgeX to join AVPro Edge, AtlasIED and Hunter Douglas.

“The Control Concepts Supported Product program continues to receive positive responses from both manufacturers and programmers who are seeking a definitive way to distinguish products that have authorized, proven and supported control modules, drivers and plugins,” remarks Steve Greenblatt, president and founder, Control Concepts.

He adds, “There are a lot of unofficial solutions that programmers can find themselves implementing without knowing. The Control Concepts Supported Product program brings to light products with authorized control integrations that are backed by the manufacturer, endorsed by the control platform, and actively supported by our experienced team of developers. Programmers in the field can rest assured that these products will be controlled effectively and that they will receive the technical support they need to resolve any programming challenges.”

Per a statement, the continued growth of this program demonstrates the importance and value that ease of control and product integration have to manufacturers while providing programmers with a tried-and-true solution that addresses their specific needs.

Benefits of Control Concepts Supported Product Program

Per the company, manufacturers whose products are Control Concepts Supported benefit from the knowledge, experience and reputation built over 25 years of its rich history as AV control system programmers. Control Concepts Supported Products also offer specifiers confidence in choosing products over alternatives that may not offer the same ease of control, programming, integration and interoperability.

“When it comes to controlling products, we have found that even the best-written and most fully vetted modules, drivers and plugins do not guarantee successful project outcomes,” shares Brittany DiCesare, director of sales and operations at Control Concepts. “It is our top-notch technical support and assurance that products will be controlled effectively, even when firmware versions change, that programmers and manufacturers value.”

“With numerous unofficial developments for control available in the market, programmers need to be able to trust in a manufacturer-backed solution,” continues DiCesare. “It is now imperative for programmers to seek out not only a quality-authored module, driver or plugin to ensure guaranteed control results; they must also have the support they need to ensure a successful project implementation.”

The company adds that the Control Concepts Supported Product program continues to raise the bar by setting a new standard in the industry. The integrated fingerprint reader not only provides security, but also features a locking mechanism. This mechanism temporarily locks the system after multiple unauthorized attempts.

Additional Features

Easy network integration via wireless or wired connection via Wi-Fi or LAN cable. If a network cable is used, the device can be powered using Power over Ethernet (PoE). In the event of a temporary internet outage, all functions within the local network Part of ASSA ABLOY 2 will remain active. The software for the IP access control solution runs on the device itself. Thus, it eliminates the need for additional hardware components. In addition to two relays, DoorBird A1122 has a configurable Wiegand output interface for integration with existing access control or alarm systems.

Installers can also integrate the device into third-party home and building automation systems via HTTP(S) calls. This new access control system from DoorBird is more than just innovative technology — it is a holistic solution that combines security, flexibility and ease of use, says the company.

9 Emerging Trends Redefining In-Room Control Systems https://www.commercialintegrator.com/blogs/9-emerging-trends-redefining-in-room-control-systems/ https://www.commercialintegrator.com/blogs/9-emerging-trends-redefining-in-room-control-systems/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2023 17:59:19 +0000 https://www.commercialintegrator.com/?p=125888 High quality comes to the fore as people seek an in-room control experience that's not only streamlined and intuitive but also delivers a 'wow' factor.

The post 9 Emerging Trends Redefining In-Room Control Systems appeared first on Commercial Integrator.

Successful commercial integrators understand the need to deliver technology experiences that are better than those at home. The philosophy holds true in restaurants, sports bars, theaters, churches and now, at work. After years spending time in home offices that workers created to cater to their own preferences and comfort levels with technology, employees are demanding a customized, personalized experience in corporate boardrooms. Significantly, they expect an environment that raises the bar on the typical videoconference session. Fortunately, in-room control technology capabilities can meet these demands, creating a multi-camera, automated boardroom experience with high production values, all accomplished using products that operate seamlessly together.

“We need to provide some ‘wow factor’ to the system that we’re implementing, and it needs to provide a lot more value than what they have at home,” Steve Greenblatt, CTS, founder and president of Control Concepts Inc., says. Control Concepts is a provider of specialized software and services for the AV industry. “If someone feels they can do [the same thing] at home, they are going to say they don’t have to come to the office.”

Commercial Integrator sought the insights of Greenblatt, as well as Andrew Stanley, vice president of services at The Farm AV. Together, we discussed some of the advances and trends in room control that are poised to take us through the next decade of workplace connectivity, productivity and efficiency.

Technology in Every Boardroom

Very rarely do you see a boardroom specified without AV and control, Stanley says, pointing to the first post-pandemic trend that emerged. “Coming out of the pandemic, we were kind of afraid that no one was going to go back to the office and there would be fewer conference rooms being built.” On the contrary, the hybrid-work model has brought increased demand for AV and control devices. “You still need a place to have meetings,” he says.

He adds that these rooms need to accommodate in-office participants and remote participants. “In the past, you might have rooms that were just meeting space,” he reflects. “Now, almost every room has to be outfitted with videoconferencing capabilities.”

Standardized, Easy-to-Use Solutions

Although clients have always expected a seamless, simple user experience, easy control becomes even more important when virtually every space — whether in a corporate facility or an education campus — now requires AV and control devices. This has generated considerable interest in products like the AV Controller Series from Legrand | AV brand C2G. Consolidated control from a single location, via an in-wall solution like the AV Controller, has become increasingly compelling for many integrators.

More broadly, Greenblatt encourages standardizing control systems, devices and interfaces to have a similar look, feel and operation, thus delivering a consistent experience across corporate or education campuses. “Anybody can go in any room and be very comfortable,” he says.

Integration with Unified Communications

More often than not, meeting spaces utilize UC platforms like Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. When it comes to boardroom AV and room control, UC has changed everything, our experts declare.

“Those [platforms] are becoming the core of the system operation because that’s what everybody spends most of their time using,” Greenblatt says.

Initially, this presented challenges for integration businesses, as clients moved away from hardware-based videoconferencing and codecs and turned to UC platforms. Previously, Stanley recalls, separate control devices might be required for lighting, shades and temperature. You certainly couldn’t make these adjustments within your videoconferencing interface.

Today, the option exists for the room control system to operate within a separate tab or second screen on Zoom, Teams and Google Meet via a control system API. “Our clients can enjoy the experience of Zoom,” Stanley says. “But, when you tab over, you can turn the lights on, raise and lower shades, change the temperature or switch sources.”

Zoom — or your UC platform of choice — defers to the control system to provide seamless operation. “From the user-experience standpoint, they don’t know the difference,” Stanley says.

Greenblatt underscores that the “walled gardens” and “closed ecosystems” of the past are now opening up thanks to API integration. Regardless of the preferred control system, hardware, software and UC platforms can now operate seamlessly.

“They need to be interoperable,” Greenblatt says, “so a third-party product doesn’t just work with one control platform — it works with several.” He explains that this is another trend that has emerged since the pandemic.

Replicable Solutions

With open API integration so prevalent today, Greenblatt says that he is also seeing a trend toward replicable systems with field-configurable programming.

“Minor variations that exist from room to room do not require programming changes,” he says. “The result is a singular code set for a majority of the typical room types. We are seeing a desire to have fewer one-off, bespoke systems.” This, of course, aligns with our earlier point about standardization and consistency from space to space.

Production Quality Experiences

Maintaining consistency within a corporate building or education campus certainly does not mean today’s systems are boring or that they lack features. Employees’ demand for seamless experiences has led The Farm AV to push the envelope on what today’s control systems and devices can accomplish.

“Rather than that simple, one-camera shot [that is] looking down a boardroom table with six or eight people sitting there,” Stanley begins, “they want to have a better visual experience.” He notes that he’s been getting a lot of requests for multi-camera automation.

“During the pandemic, you were face to face with everybody,” Stanley points out. “Now, you go back to the conference room, and you can barely see if a person’s mouth is moving — let alone see their facial expressions.” He continues, “People have been trying to find a way to fill that gap.”

Automatic Camera Preset Recall

Stanley and Greenblatt both attest that they’re seeing more requests to marry microphone and camera solutions together via the control system. Automatic Camera Preset Recall, a feature offered in Q-SYS control systems, uses beam-forming microphones to pinpoint the person talking. The microphone then sends a signal to the control system, which triggers camera automation.

“Not only is the audio system able to single out the person who is speaking and filter out the background noise, but the camera system is also tracking,” Stanley explains.

Presenter Tracking

Integrators can take a visual approach to camera automation following Crestron’s acquisition of 1 Beyond. Data from the camera connected to a 1 Beyond processor is usable to track the presenter, even as they walk across the room. “It’s not using acoustic cues to recall presets,” Stanley explains. On the contrary, he says, “It’s using visual processing to identify and capture that person.”

Seervision, a Swiss company, works with Q-SYS control systems to deliver similar functionality. According to Stanley, “You can upload pictures of the CEO, and it will use [facial] detection to give someone priority or caption the images on the screen.”

By connecting the cameras in a conference room to either control system using these products, it’s also possible, when the cameras send the applicable signals, to turn on or dim spotlights, have lights follow presenters, or focus on a whiteboard or podium.

“The advantages are being able to frame a presenter as they walk around a room,” Stanley explains. “You can [also] create these exclusion and inclusion zones. If a person walks too far to the left, the camera’s not going to track them to that space. The camera will zoom back and give you a wide shot.”

Screen Equity

One thing that goes hand-in-hand with a production quality, almost-cinematic-feeling experience is the concept of screen equity. “There’s a feeling that, if you’re calling in remote, you’ve got a lot more screen time,” Stanley explains.

Stanley cites a recent boardroom installation, completed by The Farm AV, in which every seat had a 14-inch monitor and camera. “Everybody on the far side was able to see everybody’s face on the screen individually,” he recalls. “We’re seeing a lot of this push to get more advanced with the way we capture all the local participants.”

The same room uses additional cameras and microphones trained on a podium, whiteboard and each side of the table, as well as the CEO’s seat. Based on acoustic cues, the far-side view switches automatically to show the appropriate images.

AI Under the Hood

Further reflecting on the growing role of in-room control systems and devices in corporate boardrooms and on education campuses, Stanley says, “Everybody is asking for some level of automation.”

Although the control system, programming and peripheral technology all play a part, Stanley says that none of it would be possible without the recent advances in artificial intelligence. “It’s embedded in a lot of what’s happening now,” he comments, noting that AI helps route data across the network to maintain the quality of service behind the scenes.

“As service providers, we don’t typically interact with AI, but we see it in this level of automation,” he reflects. “We couldn’t be where we are today — the state of AV and control — without it.”

Matild Palace is the latest Commercial Integrator 2023 Integration Award winning project to grab the spotlight. Of course, CI’s annual Integration Awards highlight the most dazzling, most technology-forward applications of audiovisual technologies in venues around the country and across the world. Our independent panel of expert judges evaluates dozens of applications, selecting the best across numerous categories.

Matild Palace, which C.E.H. Kft and Crestron submitted, earned top honors in the extremely competitive Best Hotel/Hospitality Project category. Our editors are delighted to showcase the project for the Commercial Integrator audience.

Historical, Distinctive Matild Palace

As part of the Luxury Collection Hotel portfolio from Marriott International, Matild Palace is a historical palace intrinsically connected to its locale. The legendary facility boasts a distinctive ambiance, representing its Hungarian heritage. Built during the Belle Epoque era in 1902, Matild Palace is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site; accordingly, it is under monumental protection. Today, the Budapest hotel is committed to inspiring guests with its rich history, culture and epicurean excellence, which combine luxurious surroundings with authentic experiences.

Matild Palace reached out to C.E.H. Kft because of the company’s extensive expertise with AV in luxury hotels. The Marriott property turned to C.E.H. Kft to handle the AV part of the renovation. The firm’s mission was to make sure that the AV systems could fulfill the highest demands with respect to sound quality but also blend in with the sparkling beauty of this historical building.

For its part, C.E.H. specializes in designing, building, programming and maintaining professional hotel and restaurant AV, as well as building control systems. The brief for Matild Palace was clear: The owners wanted an intuitive, reliable, flexible solution. Since refurbishments in luxury hotels are done every eight to 10 years, the solution also had to remain innovative and relevant for a decade.

Crestron Technology Enhances Experience

Throughout the property, Crestron technology enables the manager to create the perfect scene for guests with a combination of background music, lights and shades. The manager can do so either by using the designated tablet or a Crestron touchscreen on the wall. The hospitality area consists of the Matild Café and Cabaret, where cabaret shows and functions take place. It features a historical rising stage controlled by Crestron technology.

The Duchess rooftop bar is a place for lounging and cocktail parties. It boasts a unique view of Budapest’s historical center, along with Spago by Wolfgang Puck (the first of this brand in Europe). The shading and lights at The Duchess, which doubles as the winter garden during the colder seasons, feature integrated control so that the glass walls and ceiling panels can be managed, as well.

The Conference Area at Matild Palace

The conference area is another essential part of the hotel. There is a total of five meeting rooms, the largest one built to handle a capacity of 100. Because different people book the rooms each time they’re used, it is paramount for the controls to be intuitive. Accordingly, C.E.H. decided to outfit each meeting room with a 10-inch Crestron scheduling panel. That makes it easier to see where each meeting takes place and when any given space is booked. A Crestron DigitalMedia Switcher accommodates any combination of digital sources; meanwhile, the boardroom is equipped with a Crestron Flex kit. The other meeting rooms use Crestron AirMedia wireless presentation and collaboration systems to make it easy for every user to connect instantly from any device to any platform.

The historical design and heritage of Matild Palace run beautifully through its core. Indeed, they are unmistakable from the moment guests step in through the front doors. Crestron technology provides the property with automated controls that can be selected by hotel staff or guests, with solutions that blend in seamlessly with the hotel’s truly impeccable design.

Matild Palace Management is Delighted

Management at Matild Palace expresses heartfelt appreciation for the world-class quality that CEH was able to offer by leveraging Crestron technology to serve this World Heritage location. CEH and Crestron were able to offer technology that is fitting and discreet for the protected building, management noted, while also offering all the functionality that guests of a luxury hotel expect. That, of course, includes lights, shades, sound and conference room control.

“At Matild Palace, we have extensively used Crestron technology, which helps us provide a unique front-of-the-house experience,” Selím Ölmez, general manager, Matild Palace, explains. “Besides the conference room technology, the sound, light, shades and control solutions enable us to create a seamless guest experience in our public spaces, restaurants and bars. Thanks to the flexibility of the system, we can use our mobile devices [so we can] monitor and adjust our systems through an innovative app.”

Máté Kovács, general manager, C.E.H. Kft, reflects on the project’s success, saying, “Crestron technology offered the exact functionality they were looking for at a reasonable price. The scalability was already proven during installation when we were also asked to include the control of the glass cover of the winter bar.”

The entire Commercial Integrator editorial team sincerely congratulates C.E.H. Kft and Crestron for winning a 2023 Integration Award for their remarkable work at Matild Palace!
