Sandy Hook Elementary School Reopens With Top-of-the-Line Security Enhancements

Published: 2016-08-04

It’s been nearly four years since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 first-graders and six educators dead. On Friday, the new and improved school reopened with added security features.

The new Sandy Hook Elementary School was shown to the public on Friday and will be ready for the start of the upcoming school year. The first day of classes is Aug. 29.

The project cost $50 million and covers 86,000 square feet. It features a gated entrance, video surveillance cameras, card readers and locks at entrances, according to NBC Connecticut. Officials were reluctant to offer any additional details on the security capabilities of the new school.

“The intent of this building is to offer a warm and comfortable environment for students and boy they hit a grandslam with that,” says Supt. Dr. Joseph Erardi, “but I can also share with you the security measures in this building are second to none.”

Sandy Hook Elementary School was closed in 2013 following the December 2012 shooting.

While the new school might bring about excitement in the community, it will always be paired with grief for those whose lives were lost.
