AVI Systems Launches Battle of the Bands

Published: 2016-07-08

AVI Systems employees are in the middle of a fierce battle.

But, don’t worry. This battle is all in the name of fun.

AVI’s Battle of the Bands features employees from 15 of the company’s offices and departments showing off their musical skills, either in rewriting popular songs with AVI-themed lyrics, such as Smells Like AVI by the San Diego regional office, or lip-synching to hits in various genres including “Circle of Life,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Faith.”

The best part about AVI’s Battle of the Bands is you can pick the winner. Scratch that, the best part of the battle is the winners get a customized bobblehead doll featuring Pat Hart, AVI’s regional VP in its Denver office, and a free dinner for the team.

The second-place winners will get a lunch provided by AVI and the last-place finishers face a yet-unknown fate, says marketing communications manager Kelly Perkins.

Perkins was happy the Battle of the Bands got “a really good turnout” across AVI’s 16 offices, saying employees had about a month to come up with and execute their ideas.

The initiative, says Perkins, is part of the One AVI action program, an internal program that was launched after president and CEO Jeff Stoebner, Perkins and another AVI executive visited the company’s 16 regional offices last winter to deliver a “State of the Union” address and conduct an audit of the company.

In addition to the Battle of the Bands, AVI developed about 50 teams of 10 people each across the company through the One AVI action program, says Perkins. The teams meet weekly using video conferencing technology in efforts to find ways to improve the company as a whole.

“Sometimes, our offices felt like they were their own little islands,” says Perkins. “We’ve acquired a lot of these offices through acquisitions, so they had some of their own culture. With the One AVI program, that’s a way to bring everyone into the same culture and move together as one group.”
