HDBaseT Alliance is discussing HDBaseT over IP during InfoComm 2017.

What is HDBaseT?

HDBaseT is “the global standard for the transmission of ultra-high-definition video & audio, Ethernet, controls, USB and up to 100W of power over a single, long-distance cable,” according to the HDBaseT Alliance website. HDBaseT was launched in 2010.

This can range from a category cable (Cat6 and above) up to 100m for audiovisual, consumer electronics and industrial PCs to optical fiber spanning several kilometers for medical and government applications.

For automotive, HDBaseT can be transmitted over a single unshielded twisted pair (UTP), for up to 15m/50ft, or any other commonly used media (such as STP, HSD, coaxial and fiber).

HDBaseT “brings a rich feature set, increased reach and better performance than existing solutions,” according to the Alliance website.

The cornerstone of the technology is 5Play, the converged and simultaneous delivery of uncompressed ultra-high-definition digital video and audio, Ethernet, USB, control signals and power over a single cable.

HDBaseT Alliance Certified Product List

There are more than 110 manufacturers who have HDBaseT-certified products on the alliance’s official list.

That includes AV receivers, BluRay players, broadcast extenders, cameras, collaboration hubs, displays, fiber extenders, industrial PCs, KVM extenders, matrix switchers and projectors.

HDBaseT Installer Expert Program

HDBaseT Alliance members have access to the HDBaseT Installer Expert Program, which can be taken entirely online. Members watch several videos that tackle HDBaseT technology, architecture, best practices, interoperability and more.

HDBaseT estimates that the entire video program adds up to less than an hour. A quiz follows each video and users can earn the right to move onto the next video and quiz.

The goal of the program is to give installers a platform for improving their knowledge of HDBaseT technology. Each of the videos tackles a topic intended to provide a building block toward the goal of becoming an HDBaseT expert.

Topics include:

  • Why HDBaseT?
  • HDBaseT 5Play
  • HDBaseT Architecture
  • About the Alliance
  • Spec 2.0
  • HDBaseT Certification Program
  • Interoperability
  • HDBaseT Best Practices
  • Ecosystem & Use Cases
  • Control Interfaces

Each video is between two and three minutes long, but HDBaseT Alliance says they provide the necessary information to become a better HDBaseT professional.

The quizzes that follow each video are designed to confirm that participants have grasped the core concepts. All questions must be answered correctly before the student can advance to the next video.
