On Saturday, March 8th at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland Ohio, the Cleveland Cavaliers retired the number of their longtime center, Zydrunas Ilguaskas.

Part of the celebration included one of the coolest projection tricks we have seen in NBA history.

Quince Imaging teamed up with the Cavaliers’ own QTV team and Think Media to produce a visual illusion effect across the floor of the court.

The projection system uses 16 HD projectors, Pandora’s Box version 5.5 and the latest version of Warper. The trick was to first pixelate the entire court, and then use that as a canvass to create a stunning slideshow. A combination of 3D mapping techniques and high resolution video content makes this stunning visual display possible.

“We reverse-engineered the system by taking the court and its painted elements and translating that into pixels,” explains Scott Williams, COO of Quince Imaging. “We used 20,000 lumen HD projection systems in four quadrants on the court, and then knitted the projection areas into a final pixel space that encompassed the entire court.”

It was engineered in such a way that even those audience members in the front row could see the show clearly, thanks to precise pixel density and brightness levels.
