Western Digital Expands Purple Line of Surveillance Hard Drives

WD’s newly announced 6TB Purple hard drive is designed to support data-rich applications such as security and Internet of Things (IoT).

Earlier this year the Irvine, Calif.-based storage and networking company Western Digital (WD) entered the security market when it announced the introduction of its WD Purple line of hard drives.

The Skinny: Adding to the Purple line, the company has just announced the addition of the 6TB Purple hard drive.

The Specs: The company says the 6TB version can be used to support video surveillance within fields such as Internet of Things (IoT), and it can be used in environments with as many as eight hard drives and 32 HD video cameras.

“Video surveillance has long been a pioneering Internet of Things application. Driven by machine-to-machine interaction between high-resolution, high bit rate video cameras and high-capacity surveillance video recorders, IoT applications bring access and big data analytics to improve user’s security,” says Matt Rutledge, senior vice president and general manager of WD’s storage technology group.

The products incorporate WD’s AllFrame technology that reduces video frame loss to improve playback, and it increases the amount of drive bays supported. The hard drives also include the company’s IntelliSeek technology that calculates the correct operationals speeds for security systems to provide the proper workload to enable low power consumption, while reducing noise and vibration.

WD Purple partners include Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Uniview Technology, UIT Co., QNAP and Intelbras.

Solutions: The Purple line of products can be used in residential and small-business security systems.
