AV over IP for Installers Not Well-Versed in IT

Published: 2020-06-17

David Valentukonis of Siemon joins us on this CI 3 Questions all about what the company can offer installers who are not as well-versed in IT.

Commercial Integrator: why do you think AV over IP continues to gain popularity within the industry?

David Valentukonis: AV over IP is one of the thingss gaining popularity market-wide. We’ve seen all apps transition to IP: lighting, security, IoT… The advantages lie in economies of scale, with ethernet switch prices down. The infrastructure itself leaves room for unification and eliminating point-to-point cabling.

One of the trends not yet on IP much is the PoE aspect, with ethernet providing the power through switches. The AV market has only dipped its toes into that area. It opens platforms to work on existing IT infrastructure.

CI: Siemon is a part of InfoComm 2020 Connected, what can users expect from that presence?

DV: We’re trying to promote products that have ease-of-use qualities about them. The focus will be on connectivity solutions and the folks who aren’t familiar with structured cabling. Easy to use, easy to terminate.

We’ll also focus on our Z Plug, a field-terminated modular plug for up to category 6A systems. It’s low profile for tight situations and easy to terminate.

Our lightbulb connectors — installers may not be as familiar with optical connectors.

CI: Siemon has released an AV guide – tell us about that?

DV: Many AV folks aren’t as familiar with IT technologies. There are rules and guidelines within structured cabling that define an easily-deployable and configurable system. Our document details the flexible options available to integrators who don’t have that kind of experience.

We’re trying to migrate this technology to existing infrastructure platforms, for AV over IP, wifi deployments, security cameras, etc.
