Let’s Slow Down and Appreciate How Tech is Helping Us Track and Treat Coronavirus

Published: 2020-02-05

Let’s not panic” — famous last words of someone about to embark on a trip to one of the most international cities in the world on the heels of the coronavirus outbreak… or common sense?

Yes, I’m going to Amsterdam next week, but I’m not stress-raving that my health will take a plummet after I doubtlessly contract the virus.

Simply put, I think the odds of catching it are somewhat low, even if LG has left the show for fear of the virus. (Although, important subtext: they’re probably only leaving the show because many of their employees have regular dealings in and around China).

Am I being too cocky? Well, I will admit that it is my plan to be cautious while I’m there. I don’t plan on shaking as many hands; I’m going to be extra-inclined to utilize plentiful applications of hand sanitizer; and I’m even considering donning a mask for some parts (such as the plane rides to and from Schipol).

I’m also trying to focus on all of the good things being done to track and contain coronavirus — including the use of 5G technology.

According to a VentureBeat report, experts are being literally called in by way of 5G cellular tech to support treatment efforts.

Chinese telecom equipment provider ZTE announced that it has launched a remote 5G diagnosis and treatment system between West China Hospital and the Chengdu Public Health Clinic Center of Sichuan University, resulting in the first 5G remote diagnosis of coronavirus pneumonia.

ZTE apparently used outdoor 5G products and indoor 5G base stations in a West China Hospital conferencing room, effectively turning it into a remote diagnostic center.

VentureBeat says the use of 5G for remote medical services was something that could only be speculated on prior to viral outbreak. China was one of the first adopters of 5G, and it’s probably a good thing they were!
