Vietnam’s Cities are Embracing Biophilic Building Design

Published: 2020-04-20

Vietnam’s jungles have long been reaching into the nation’s cities — now, architects are embracing the wilderness with biophilic building design.

That term “biophilic” is connected with the growing trend of wellness tech — solutions designed to bring elements of nature into our daily lives more.

This is based around the fact that Americans spend 90% of their day indoors. Spending that much time inside and away from natural light can affect sleeping patterns and energy levels.

Wellness technology in commercial and corporate settings can have an effect on the mood of your customers and clients. For example, music has long played a role in the restaurant industry to help speed up table times or encourage customers to sit longer. In the office, music, noise control or sound masking systems can help employee be more engaged and relaxed.

Here are some ways Vietnam spaces are utilizing biophilic building design, according to wallpaper.com:

Lebadang Memory Space, by Ho Viet Vinh

Nestled in the countryside together with Hue’s centuries-old royal tombs, Lebadang Memory Space is a lively architectural update to the city’s monarchical heritage. This contemporary art museum is dedicated to late local artist Le Ba Dang, who sketched the drawing that the blueprints are based on. Local architect Ho Viet Vinh designed the structure, completed in April 2019, with a central skylight that allows beams of light to track through the exhibition hall throughout the day.

An upcoming central park concept for Ho Chi Minh City’s September 23 Park will utilize one of the city’s largest green spaces to create a gallery, performance, and sporting zone.

Wallpaper reports that “water purification trees collect and recycle rainwater, ventilation trees provide fresh air and solar trees generate power.”

As architects and their partnering cities and towns across the world are considering biophilic building design, AV integration firms may have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor and secure a spot in the trend for their own solutions.
