Schools seeking to implement BYOD may face a few obstacles, but having the right software and management plan in place will help make BYOD successful.

Teachers face the challenge of not only managing each student’s device in the classroom, but also understanding each device’s capabilities, and learning how to incorporate each device into their curriculum. This is where having the right software to make BYOD effective in the classrooms is of vital importance.

“You don’t want the students who are using their phones to not be able to see a video being shown in class while the people who are using their laptops can,” says Brown.

Teachers face the challenge of not only managing each student’s device in the classroom, but also understanding each device’s capabilities, and learning how to incorporate each device into their curriculum.

Cloud-based software such as Sonic Foundry’s software successfully integrates with learning management systems, allowing students and teachers to access content from any device. Keeping students on the same page in the classroom is a challenge within itself, but with access to the right software, BYOD can be incredibly beneficial to a students’ learning experience.

“Once you start to open up Pandora’s Box, teachers will have to have the skills that will allow them to know how to accommodate all these different platforms and device types,” says Winn.

“You need to deliver an experience where a student can log in on any device, anywhere, anytime and have the same experience, where they can see all the apps and the desktops on their school portal and see them in the simplest of ways. Those are the kinds of things schools need to consider.”
