The Audio Engineering Society (AES) has welcomed Josh Reiss as its president for 2022. Reiss’ term of service began on Jan. 1. He, of course, has garnered honors and accolades for his work with the AES and beyond. He has published numerous research papers. Moreover, he has taken on many roles to help advance the Society via events and education.

“I am excited to have Josh Reiss take the reins and help lead the AES,” Jonathan Wyner, the outgoing AES president, says. He points to Reiss’ deep knowledge of audio technology coupled with his appetite for innovation. Wyner continues, “He’s been a Board of Directors member as President-Elect during the past year, and [he has] also served as a chair of committees within AES over many years.” Therefore, he adds, Reiss has proven his abilities and demonstrated a passion for the AES. That, Wyner concludes, will serve the AES well in the year to come.

Reiss’ Decades of Service to the AES

Reiss’ involvement in the AES has spanned more than 15 years, including being vice-chair of the Publications Policy Committee. He was also co-chair of the Technical Committee on High-Resolution Audio and a former governor of the Society. In 2007, he was general chair of the 31st AES Conference, New Directions in High-Resolution Audio. Moreover, in 2009, he was general secretary of the 35th AES International Conference, Audio for Games.

In addition, Reiss has served on the organizational team for several AES International Conventions. That includes serving in the role of chair of the 128th, program chair of the 130th and co-program chair of the 138th AES Conventions. Moreover, Reiss has published over 150 scientific papers, including more than 70 in AES publications. He also authored the book, Working with the Web Audio API and co-authored the books Intelligent Music Production and Audio Effects: Theory, Implementation and Application.

Reiss’ Leadership Roles

Reiss served as coordinator of the EASAIER project. In so doing, he led an international consortium to improve access to sound archives in museums, libraries and cultural-heritage institutions. He is also co-founder of the startup initiatives LandR, providing intelligent tools for audio production, and Tonz, providing neural network-based audio effects. Another startup based on his team’s research, Nemisindo, recently launched an online service for procedural sound design and the Nemisindo Action Pack of fully procedural audio plugins for sound-effect creation in Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.

In addition, Reiss is currently a professor with the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London. There, he teaches digital audio effects and sound design. He also leads the audio engineering research team.
