Estonians Used an App to Hunt for Trees This Year

Published: 2019-12-25

According to a recent Reuters report, Estonians used a Christmas tree app to locate and cut down their trees this year for the first time.

The app was designed as a modern update to a tradition spanning Estonian culture: the act of heading into the forest to find one’s own tree.

More from the Reuters report:

“The state forestry company of Estonia, a country where almost all government services are available online, has launched a mobile application which allows people to search for their trees and pay for them.

‘It is a nice feeling to bring your own tree from the forest,’ said Katrin Sagur, who went with her husband and kids this week to pick out a Christmas tree using the app.

Quizzically, no more details were made available in the report as to how the app works, who logs tree locations, etc. so we are left to our devices to speculate on that.

I picture a bunch of families staring at their screens when they should be outdoo–

HA, wait, no, I’m totally not gonna sound like a grandpa and say that this is “technology being shoved into every element of our daily lives” or that these Estonians “are relying too much on their phones.”

Heck, if I were to venture out into the European forests, I’d want an app to give me a little guidance, too!
