Ambisonic’s STX Line Arrays Incorporate Planar Magnetic Drivers

Published: 2015-06-19

Ambisonic Sound Technologies has announced its STX Series loudspeakers. The series consists of Column Line Array Loudspeakers that use its True Coaxially-aligned mid-range and PMRD tweeters to create a choice of cost-effective, single-box solutions for the professional audio market.

Supporting the line arrays, the Ariz.-based company is augmenting the products with a choice of subwoofers that are engineered to match the performance characteristics of the STX line arrays.

Company founder and CEO Jeffrey Coombs points out the company’s goal in developing the speakers was to design a choice of solutions that could be used in a variety of installation scenarios.

“We wanted to create a single-box line array solution that could be combined in a variety of configurations to cover almost any project, but we had high standards for sound quality,” explains Coombs. “The sonic performance of the STX series is incredible, creating high-output audiophile sound like I’ve never heard before.”

The Single-Box Column Line Array Loudspeakers utilize the company’s advanced Planar Magnetic Ribbon Drivers (PMRD) and a high-power 6.5-inch custom, neodymium magnet driven, Kevlar/paper Mid-Woofer. The true coaxial configuration of these drivers along with Ambisonic’s waveguide is said to deliver a 110 degrees of horizontal coverage, and improved front-to-back audience coverage to within +/- 2dB.

In addition, the companion subwoofers are available with 12, 15 and 18-inch drivers, and they use large motor structures and dual-layered voice coils to provide complementary impactful low frequencies down to 34Hz.

The STX 6600, 6620, and 4625 Column Line Array models’ outstanding performance starts with the advanced PMRD design. These ribbon drivers feature a low mass-moving system that are designed to provide fast transient responses and faithful signal reproduction.

The tweeter is complemented by a proprietary mid-woofer design that features a powerful and lightweight neodymium-magnet motor structure. The strength and lightness of the motor is said to yield extremely low distortion in the critical midrange frequencies that matches with the faithfulness of the ribbon tweeter. Weather–resistant Kevlar/paper cone material generates stiffness and durability with less coloration, while the entire low-mass and balanced system provides for more linear performance and high sensitivity.

Ambisonic adds the key to the design is the integration of the ribbon tweeter and mid-woofer that forms its True Coaxial design that produces a perfectly symmetrical horizontal coverage pattern.Adding the company’s unique waveguide design delivers 110-degrees of horizontal coverage.

Augmenting the performance of the products, Ambisonic is combining the line arrays with its Array Optimization Software (AOS) that allows the listener in the back row to hear the same sound level as the person in the front row, +/- 2dB.

All models are available in black or white cabinets—except where noted—as well as in a black, outdoor version. A portable model in black utilizes a Line Array Loudspeaker with four pairs of coaxial line array drivers and a 15-inch subwoofer that facilitate the products use for everything from DJ’ing to mobile events.
