A ruling Wednesday from Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey might have big implications in the world of security system installation.
The Attorney General overturned a cease and desist order against Comcast stemming from a 2012 lawsuit backed by the Electrical Board that had kept the company from installing security systems in two towns in Massachusetts.
The ruling states Comcast’s Xfinity system “does not constitute a security system” and the company is free to continue operating in those areas without obtaining a license or permit for its security work.
Commercial Integrator‘s sister publication Security Sales & Integration reports, according to a source with knowledge of the legal proceedings, two electrical inspectors — one in Andover, Mass., the other in Amesbury — filed the cease and desist orders for those areas back in 2012, which was upheld by the Electrical Board.
The Massachusetts Systems Contractors Association (MSCA) suspended the lawsuit based on the Electrical Board’s decision, leaving it in the hands of the Attorney General.
The Attorney General’s decision overturns the Electrical Board’s decision, stating that Comcast’s Xfinity system does not fall under the regulations of normal security system installation. Comcast is now free to operate as it normally would have.
