Mounting Solutions: The Underdog of the Video Wall World

Published: 2020-04-14

Video walls are such a visually-stunning section of the pro AV market, but it’s often what’s behind the screen that’s truly important. We sat down with Brandon Breznick, assistant communications manager for Premier Mounts, to learn more about mounting solutions.

Commercial Integrator: How crucial is the actual mount to video wall projects?

Brandon Breznick: The way we like to think of it is: if you want to buy a house, you’ll want to avoid anything with a bad foundation. The metal hardware we use sets the positioning and it means that whatever display you use, it’ll have the best positioning. A bad mount definitely leads to bad image quality.

The one killer for LED is seams in a wall; making sure the walls are seamless is huge, and a mount helps do that.

CI: Site conditions can also have an averse effect – what are some common site problems you’ve seen?

BB: The beauty of video walls is that you can throw them in at any point in a building’s construction or remodeling. But we’ve seen wall unevenness a lot — we have this old school method where we throw on some dry wall screws and measure them with string, making note of the differentials in the wall conditions. We level out the display surface to make sure everything is even.

We also have to know what type of surface we’re mounting into. Attacking dry wall or concrete needs different approaches.

CI: Are there different considerations for LCD vs. LED video walls?

BB: LED is still wild-west when it comes to mounting; cabinet sizes vary, but there’s uniformity in the couples. But the biggest thing is: with LCD mounts, there’s a degree of lateral shift for adjustments. With LED, you have to go all the way down to the exact millimeter of where the cabinet sits on the wall.
