Star Wars saga

This nine-movie epic takes us to a period a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but can provide some lessons for we Earthlings in the 2020s too, particularly those who work in a family business or are trying to ensure the profession they’ve loved since they were children becomes the passion of their kids too. Yes, the overall theme focus on good vs. evil, but you don’t have to know everything about the so-called Skywalker saga to see what happens when you try to force your kid to focus on what you think he should do rather than what he wants to do. Let’s just say it gets a little dark—more than once.

The AV business takeaway: Instead of worrying so much about building a company to leave to your kids when you don’t feel like doing it anymore, maybe let them follow their dreams, even if that’s not what it was for you. It’s the right approach to groom someone to take over your company when you’re gone, but if your kids show no interest in it, you’re better off finding someone who shares your love of the business. — Craig MacCormack
