What Is Lengo? And How Can It Increase Individuals’ Productivity?

Published: 2017-06-26

One of the quirkier offerings I saw at Infocomm 2017 was Lengo by Lencore.

A good writer would have included a quick explanation in that first sentence instead of just dropping the word “Lengo” as if you’re supposed to know what that is. My challenge is that it’s a little bit difficult to explain. I’ll try.

Many people know that Lencore is a well-known provider of sound-masking solutions for office environments. Sound-masking is an audio solution that distributes gentle background ambient noises into a space in order to cover (or mask) distracting noise such as co-workers talking – it’s a logical solution for today’s open-office spaces.

Lengo is not a sound-masking solution. But it’s sort of like a second cousin.

Like sound-masking, Lengo is an audio solution. It’s not distributed through ceiling speakers like most sound-masking solutions. Rather it’s distributed through headphones since it’s a very personalized solution.

Also like sound masking, Lengo is a productivity tool. Instead of essentially covering sound like sound-masking does, Lengo sends a specific type of music, customized for each user, that strategically stimulates their brain. At least that’s what Lencore VP of marketing David Smith told me.

The tempo is important, he explained. For instance, Lengo might may play music at a slow or even pace for a few minutes and then shift to a faster tempo. That’s because the brain needs to be stimulated consistently, Smith said. An employee who is working diligently on a project might eventually become naturally distracted because their brain is craving something else. Then a well-timed boost in music tempo can quench that craving, allowing them to continue to focus productively.

Meanwhile, the types of music that Lengo sends are specific to each person, Smith explained. A genre or type of music might work perfectly to keep one employee focused, but but have the opposite effect on another individual because they don’t like the music or find it annoying. That’s why Lengo is distributed on an individual level via headphones.

So Lengo is a personalized distributed audio solution and service that aims to help employees stay focused and productivity with strategic use of music.

How’s that? Make sense?

OK, here’s how Lencore describes Lengo:

With the introduction of Lengo, Lencore is able to help increase productivity on the individual level! Lengo embraces the diverse work habits of the individual and creates a means for short term concentration when heads-down work is required.

Scientifically proven to increase focus and reduce distractions, Lengo’s individual productivity service works in tandem with Lencore’s sound masking solutions, delivering privacy and comfort for larger office environments.

How It Works:

Scientists have discovered that an individual’s  personality dictates a specific type of “music”, that when engineered right, puts that individual’s brain into a “flow state” making that person hyper-focused and exponentially more productive.

Upon initial use, Lengo will ask the user a few questions, determine the perfect music for that user,  and suggest the scientifically engineered music channel that will increase their focus by up to 4 times.

The user will still have access to over 50 other channels, but will know exactly what channels provide optimal levels of productivity for their unique personality.
