Sound Masking: How Much Do You Know About It?

Published: 2020-01-06

People tend to be more dissatisfied with sound privacy than noise level. That’s the biggest drawback of modern, open-floor spaces: there’s just no speech privacy without some form of sound masking.

In healthcare environments, sound masking reduces speech intelligibility, eases a patient’s fear of being overheard and satisfies the mandated HIPAA requirements. It can also improve sleep, a very important part of the healing process.

When deployed properly, sound masking systems mimic a gentle flow of air, but they don’t use white noise, which is a very specific type of sound.

Our questions: how many integrators are familiar with this technology, and how familiar are they if they are?

Sound masking is an excellent low-cost option for creating speech privacy in open office spaces and healthcare environments in particular. But in order for this tech to take off, it has to gain traction in a tech installation industry where so many other office and healthcare tech is vying for attention.
