Zoom Requires Zoom Room Admins to Update Controller Software

Published: 2020-06-01

Attention AV integrators that install and manage Zoom Rooms: Zoom is urging Zoom Rooms administrators to update their rooms as Zoom rolls out version 5.0 to provide greater security and privacy.

The urging comes as Zoom mandates that Zoom Rooms be updated to meet the minimum requirements for Zoom 5.0 and for GCM encryption, which are now required for all meetings.

A new security icon gives administrators and meeting hosts the ability to:

  • Unlock/lock meetings
  • Enable/disable waiting rooms
  • Enable/disable in-meeting chat
  • Enable/disable participant renaming
  • Enable/disable screen sharing
  • Remove a participant
  • Report a participant

5.0 also gives hosts the ability to reassign the host role to another participant when the original host is leaving. If a co-host is in the meeting, they will rise to the top of the list and the rest of the participants will appear in alphabetical order.

Another major feature of 5.0 is a feature that requires someone in the room to accept or decline an attempt to unmute a Zoom Room on the room controller.

Additional features coming soon allow non-video participants to be displayed with their avatar and putting call history off by default.

What conference room admins need to know

All Zoom clients and Zoom Rooms must be on version 5.0 or greater to join any meetings as GCM encryption will be fully enabled. That can be done via the Zoom Admin Portal.

On June 30, Zoom Rooms will have enhanced encryption between Zoom Rooms Controller and Zoom Rooms enabled. Rooms Controllers not running the minimum versions won’t be able to continue to function. Controller software can be updated here.

Customers with third-party SIP and H.323 conference rooms connect via Zoom’s Conference Room Connector do not require any action since the changes don’t impact third-party encryption. The cloud-hosted room connector has been upgraded to ensure compatibility with all GCM meetings.

If those customers are leveraging the self-hosted Virtual Room Connector, they will need to upgrade the server software to the new version.
