Christie Announces Higher Ed Initiatives at DSE 2015

Published: 2015-03-23

Christie‘s Denys Lavigne revealed two major technology initiatives at Digital Signage Expo 2015 that are making their way to higher education.

The first is Christie’s Design Studio, which features 3D projection mapping on any canvas.

Lavigne says he thinks Design Studio will impact digital media applications in higher education, especially with the role of digital signage shifting past traditional HD displays.

“I know there are more and more universities that are investing in technical infrastructure to integrate as tools for the students to explore new types of canvases and digital applications,” says Lavigne, senior director of experience strategy and creative services at Christie. “We’re at a point in digital signage, which was a clear message from the show, where digital signage is not just about an HD screen anymore. It’s about any type of digital media that you want it to be.”

Lavigne says he thinks colleges will benefit from Design Studio because there is a demand for digital technology that creates more engaging experiences for end users and students.

“I think for the higher education context this is really appropriate because higher education is the type of audience profile that is more sophisticated in terms of the way they use digital [solutions], interact with their mobile phones and digital displays,” he says. “It’s also an audience that expects more out of digital displays, and very often they’re looking for more levels of engagement.”

Lavigne says that Christie Experiential Networks is the second major initiative that will boost business in higher education. The fully-integrated, nationwide, digital-out-of-home advertising network will give universities (as well as studios and other commercial spaces) access to an innovative visual platform to connect with today’s tech-savvy consumers.

He says that while the network program still has a year or two of development to go, it will increase more revenue opportunities for colleges.

Through Christie Experiential Networks, “we help set up digital networks that we put in schools on our dime, and we give them to revenue share models with property owners,” says Lavigne.

He says that Christie will then sell advertising and get into a revenue share model with exhibitors that get involved with Christie Experiential Networks’ relationships. From there, Christie will collaborate with the property owners and align the content strategy for the school.

“That model is something we’d really like to develop in the education market because there is a need in this environment to communicate in a sophisticated way with audiences,” Lavigne says. “I think through branded experiences or sponsored content there are some interesting revenue opportunities for universities.”
