Relatively speaking, the California manufacturer Manley Labs built a boutique audio company in a short amount of time. The company now offers a line of audio production tools that ranges from equalizers and microphone preamps to microphones and mastering tools.
The Skinny: Validating the power of its product line, recording engineer Jason LaRocca says he uses Manley’s Variable Mu Stereo Limiter/Compressor to record the soundtrack for the ABC show Once Upon a Time.
The Specs: Internally the Variable Mu Stereo Limiter/Compressor incorporates Manley’s own input and output transformers, balanced inputs and outputs, a fully differential all-tube circuit design that employs a 5670, 5751, 7044 or 5687, 12ALS tubes per channel, and a stepped switch input attenuator.
Some of the limiter/compressors user options include variable attack options ranging from 25 msec to 70 msec, continuously variable threshold, limit options ranging from 4:1 to 20:1, compress options ranging from 1.5 to 1 and large backlit Sifam meters.
Manley adds it also offers custom options for the Variable Mu Stereo Limiter/Compressor for surround and mastering applications.
