Published: 2014-03-06

There is no technology within the business world that is creating more buzz than 3D printing. One of the leading manufacturers in this increasingly hot category is the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company MakerBot.

The Skinny: Recently the company announced it is taking orders for its Replicator Mini Compact 3D Printer.

The Specs: The $1,375 3D printer is available via the company’s 800 sales number, as well as its online portal and three retail locations in Boston, New York and Greenwich, Conn.

For those unfamiliar with this emerging technology, MakerBot defines the 3D printing category by saying, “3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, means making things layer by layer according to a 3D design file. This differs from traditional manufacturing, such as machining, which often involves subtracting a material in order to achieve a certain shape.”

FEATURED REPORT

The Replicator Mini Compact 3D Printer is designed to reside on a user’s desktop or table and is designed to quickly reproduce a default 200-micron layer for 3D resolution prints. The product is backed by its MakerBot Replicator 3D Printing Platform that includes an on-board camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, and offers features such as app-based and cloud-based workflow capabilities.

MakerBot also points out the Replicator Mini Compact 3D Printer is optimized for MakerBot PLA filament which is available in a choice of 17 colors. It also supports the ability to download 3D models from Thingiverse.com.
