Rosendin has won the 2024 Commercial Integration Award for Best Government Project with its modernization of the San Francisco International Airport Harvey Milk Terminal 1!

The Harvey Milk Terminal 1 project at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) marked a significant step forward in modernizing airport infrastructure with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Completed in the summer of 2024, this ambitious $2.4 billion project transformed a 619,150 sq. ft. concourse, elevating passenger experience and operational efficiency. Notably, it achieved a landmark status as the world’s first LEED Platinum v4 airport terminal, underscoring SFO’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

San Jose, Calif.-headquartered, Rosendin, took on the critical role of technology systems design-builder and systems integrator, providing expert guidance and execution throughout the project. Collaborating closely with architects, stakeholders and multiple general contractors, Rosendin spearheaded the design, construction, integration, and commissioning of the technology systems. Their scope included:

  • Access Control & Security Systems: Implementing advanced security measures such as biometric readers, security cameras and automated exit lane systems.
  • Network Technologies: Expanding SFO’s LAN/WAN and Wi-Fi networks, alongside telephony enhancements and the installation of a Neutral Host Distributed Antenna System for improved cellular service.
  • AV Systems: Installing videowalls and electronic visual information display systems (EVIDS), enhancing passenger communication and engagement.
  • Operational Systems: Developing shared passenger processing and queue management systems to streamline terminal operations.

Installation Strategy

Rosendin’s prefabrication approach ensured alignment with tight schedules and complex requirements. By validating installation methods through a “first in place” strategy, they secured stakeholder approval and synchronized efforts with other trades. Utilizing BIM technology guaranteed precise device placement, while meticulous task planning facilitated the installation of over 1,400 devices seamlessly.

The modernization of Terminal 1 has set a new benchmark for airports, integrating environmentally-friendly design with the latest technology. Rosendin’s efforts were instrumental in maintaining project milestones, achieving zero downtime, and ensuring robust safety and security protocols. The collaboration with SFO’s duty managers and IT department was pivotal in navigating the challenges of an active 24/7 airport environment.

The revamped terminal, celebrated for its museum-grade art installations and high-speed Wi-Fi, has garnered numerous awards, reflecting SFO’s dedication to the arts and sustainability.
