Direct-View LED Display Mounting: 5 Factors That Will Make or Break Your Project

The customer wants a direct-view LED display to achieve digital signage or AV communications goals, and who can blame them? There are many benefits to the technology including high brightness, great viewing angles and strong total cost of ownership. However, it’s important not to move forward quickly without considering important LED display mounting factors.

Mounting solutions provider Premier Mounts, in a whitepaper by executive VP of channel management Tiffany Dozier, lays out some important factors to consider:

Make Sure Pixel Pitch Corresponds to Distance

It’s essential to select the correct pixel pitch relative to the viewing distance of audience, writes Dozier.

The pixel pitch defines the quality of the image, but also how close someone should stand to the display before they will see the individual pixels break out from a smooth image. This makes it imperative to select the proper pixel pitch for your AV communications/digital signage needs.

Weigh Indoor vs. Outdoor

When it comes to mounting it comes as no surprise that indoor and outdoor scenarios carry unique challenges, according to Dozier.

LED tiles are typically more durable than a _at panel (in general), but each manufacturer will offer both indoor rated (not weatherized or IP rated), and outdoor rated (that are IP rated or weatherized, and needed for harsh environments).

Selecting the correct rating is important for the longevity of the tiles, and thus the success of the digital signage AV communications project.

Wall Support Varies Greatly

Mounting and wall support go hand-in-hand, and Dozier writes that safety should be a big priority when it comes to direct-view LED mounting.

With safety being one of the most important pieces of the puzzle, weight loads of the structure will need to be calculated to ensure the structure will support the weight of the LED displays and mounting solution.

Servicing Should Be Easy

While it might not be the customer’s top priority, it’s important to have a plan for facilitating service of a direct-view LED display, as Dozier explains.

It’s important to know if you will need to get behind the LED cabinets to perform  service. If the cabinet requires access to the back side, then your mounting solutions provider must deliver a mount that will allow for extending the displays for access.

It’s recommended that there be at least 25 inches of clear space behind the cabinets that allow technicians to access and to remove rear covers.
