The Idea Guy
This person has an idea a minute, spouting them off mid-meeting or at random in the office so often that most of the ideas are missed or forgotten. He or she is rarely committed to one idea, but rather stuck in permanent brainstorming mode, hoping to get all the ideas out on the table for consideration.
Intention: For their ideas to spark ideas in others.
Outcome: They tend to overwhelm others who either shut down or spend time chasing the idea of the leader.
Workaround: Create a holding tank. Before you share a new idea, stop and ask yourself if you want the people who work for you to take action on it—right now. If not, hold off sharing it, and put it into a holding tank in your brain or on a piece of paper.
In the meantime, ask people if they have any ideas of their own, or tell them to take some time and brainstorm. You might end up with a better idea than the one you had in the first place, but at the very least you will have started the gears turning in your employees’ heads.
