SDVoE Alliance Members Map Future of AV over IP

Published: December 12, 2017

SDVoE Alliance members recently spent two days in Montreal “discussing the state of SDVoE deployments in pro AV today and planning the road map for 2018 and beyond,” according to an announcement from the alliance.

About 30 participants from 28 SDVoE member companies also heard a keynote presentation, “AVoIP Market Development & Outlook,” by Ben Davis of Futuresource Consulting Ltd. [related]

During the meeting, members also nominated the 2018 SDVoE board of directors: Amir Bar-Niv of Aquantia, Clark Williams of Christie Digital, Laurent Masia of NETGEAR, Justin Kennington of Semtech, Toru Suzuki of Sony, Bob Michaels of ZeeVee and Keith Kennedy of Grandbeing.

Key findings from Futuresource indicate AV over IP technology “becoming increasingly mainstream but still in the early adopter’s stage of the Innovation Adoption Lifecycle with less than 5 percent penetration in the market for pro AV ports requiring extension (as of 2016).”

Demand for AV over IP solutions “is expected to grow rapidly in the short to mid-term, replacing conventional matrix switches and multiviewers,” according to Futuresource and SDVoE research.

“The growing availability of low/zero latency solutions such as those based on SDVoE technology, and the concomitant reductions in cost, are driving adoption across major verticals: education, healthcare, enterprise, entertainment, hospitality, retail, houses of worship, government, military, industry and security.”

Challenges that have led to slow AVoIP adoption to date include the lack of standardization and the lack of networking expertise on the part of integrators.

Alliance members agreed to increase their efforts to educate the AV community on effective AV over IP system design and IT concepts more generally.

“Feedback from members confirms the research findings that the outlook is bright for SDVoE technology and the SDVoE Alliance,” said alliance president Justin Kennington.

“We are ideally positioned to overcome the challenges we face. We offer a standardized hardware and software platform for zero-latency, uncompromised video distribution and we are providing the education the market needs, including a full slate of sessions at ISE 2018.”

At ISE 2018, attendees can learn more about SDVoE through several free case study sessions, AVIXA AV/IT Workshops and Commercial Solutions Theatre presentations, which will focus on networking considerations, compression trade-offs and simplified video system design.
