Gefen EXT-UHD600-1SC Transmits 4K Over Fiber

Published: 2017-11-20

Extending the HDMI 2.0 format, which includes support for 4K Over Fiber with HDR, Gefen has just announced its new EXT-UHD600-1SC solution.

Part of the Core Brands family of companies, Gefen says its 4K Ultra HD 600 MHz Extender for HDMI over Fiber Optic Cable EXT-UHD600-1SC product is available to integrators to provide a fiber-based solution that supports today’s A/V formats.

“This extender fills a gap in the marketplace by catering to customers who need to extend uncompressed HDMI 2.0 signals. Full bandwidth HDMI 2.0 cannot yet be achieved over copper without compression, so fiber optic is still the only option for completely uncompressed AV transmission in the 4K category,” states Jason Fitzgerald, product manager, Gefen.

“The Gefen EXT-UHD600-1SC is optimal for applications in medical imaging, military and industrial command and control rooms; flight simulators, digital signage, gaming and wherever 4K full-bandwidth uncompressed video or end-to-end electrical isolation is essential.”

4K-Friendly 18Gbps of Bandwidth

Gefen explains the 4K Ultra HD 600 MHz Extender for HDMI over one fiber-optic cable provides a full 18.2Gbps of bandwidth and 600 MHzTMDS clock frequency, which is the highest specified under the HDMI standard.

The manufacturer says that by providing 18Gbps of bandwidth, the product supports up to 4K Cinema-DCI (4096×2160 at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling), as well as 4K Ultra HD (3840×2160 at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling), and the HDR-10 and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) formats.

Supporting a variety of audio formats, the EXT-UHD600-1SC also works with the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based surround sound formats, and other formats such as 7.1 channels of LPCM audio, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Gefen adds the product also guarantees electrical isolation between the sender and receiver units to comply with the stringent requirements of mission-critical applications.

“When there is a need to extend a signal beyond its intended distance limitation, UTP/STP cabling has traditionally been employed in conjunction with active electronics to push this limit much farther,” notes Fitzgerald.

“However, all of these copper-based solutions require some form of compression that is simply not acceptable for mission-critical applications. The EXT-UHD600-1SC is the best solution when uncompressed, long-distance HDMI 2.0 signal extension is required.”
