How Sony Is Making 4K Implementation Easy Across the Commercial Market

Published: November 30, 2016

Highlighting the Moffitt Cancer Center’s research and clinical partnerships with USF Health, Tampa General Hospital, and the University of South Florida is the prominence of Cisco conferencing systems and Sony 4K projectors in the University’s classrooms.

One of the major features of the latest generation Sony projectors is the laser light engines that are easier to maintain due to the elimination of bulbs that need periodic changing. The projectors also feature instant on/off functionality that facilitates more learning time, rather than wasting time waiting for projectors to power up and power down.

Feeding the Minds of Tomorrow’s AV Production Community

Offering programs such as game development and show production, Full Sail University feeds businesses such as the WWE, ABC Television, MTV, and the Vans Warped Tour professionals. Integral to the school’s growth and acceptance in the arts and entertainment industry is its relationship with Sony.

School spokesperson James Makowski says that Sony has helped students receive training on equipment they will encounter in professional environments.

“All of this wouldn’t be possible with Sony,” states Makowski. “The gear the students get to use is the gear they would use in the field.”

The school’s “Full Sail Live” venue also benefits from Sony.  The venue hosts WWE events, concerts and many other types of performances, and money earned through its alliance with the WWE goes into a scholarship fund.

Through Full Sail University’s partnership with Sony, it was able to properly specify exactly what the space needs to work with large media companies like the WWE.

Scott Dansby, industry relations, Full Sail University, says Sony’s equipment is also used throughout the whole studio “journey,” including products like the F55, F65 CineaAlta and NEX-FS100 cameras, which provide capabilities such as 4K and HDR support to help students interact with the latest technologies and formats.

Full Sail also brings Sony and Avid Technology (Pro Tools audio software) to train staff members on their respective products.

Helping students in other areas besides television and film, the school recently renovated its library to include collaboration spaces that feature Sony displays. Moreover, classrooms also feature Sony projectors and displays to foster learning.

“We’ve tried to create environments where students can go to have a more conducive [learning] environment for students to participate,” notes Dansby. “The classrooms have network connections, and we are looking to incorporate Apple TVs to have more interactive classrooms.”

Technology Part of Game Day Magic

In order to keep pace with the trends of the entertainment industry, technology is mandatory in sports venues.

Dave Storm, director of technology and broadcast services, Orlando Magic, is responsible for the off-court show of the Eastern Conference NBA (National Basketball Association) team.

“Every summer upgrades [to the facility] are made,” he says. “We’re always cycling through new gear …  its forced obsolescence.”

The Amway Center’s control room deploys Sony video displays, Tannoy nearfield monitors and Four Winds Interactive digital signage solutions.

The Four Winds system supports customized ad services throughout the building, and these services also serve Orlando Solar Bear ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) games.

Displays throughout the venue feature media players that show social media ticker feeds and a growing array of NBA statistics.

The Amway Center also boasts a Ross Inceptor Media Aggregator for social media activities, a Dream Catcher edit system for replays; Daktronics LED systems, Meyer Sound speaker arrays and multiple Sony cameras to capture in-game action.

One of the newer developments to affect game day presentations is Ultra HD.

With Ultra HD gaining momentum, the team is now shooting in 4K. Storage of this content is now becoming an issue. Storm says the team is optimistic about the possibilities that exist with 4K to enhance the game day experience in the near future.

“We’re real excited about it [4K]. The ownership group is about innovation,” he comments. “When we replace our scoreboard, we’ll need to be 4K ready [to facilitate the upgrade].”
