In an exclusive interview on the Emergency Communications spotlight, Justin Clark, head of sales and support, Americas, Australia and New Zealand, DoorBird, discusses the evolving role of intercom systems, particularly within the K-12 education space.

Clark emphasizes that the primary function of an intercom has shifted from post-entry verification to pre-entry threat assessment providing a safe means of communication. “Now [we] want that verification before you come inside, and that’s where the intercom comes into play,” he explains. “[It means] I can talk to you. I can see you. I can verify that you’re not a threat to myself or to my students or to my staff.”

According to Clark, this ability to assess a situation before granting access is a fundamental benefit that modern intercoms provide for safety.

How Does DoorBird Support IP-Based Integration for Emergency Communications?

Clark notes that DoorBird’s technology is built around providing real-time audio and video accessible from anywhere. The system’s design, centered on a mobile application, allows personnel to monitor a situation while moving to a safer location, he says. This mobility provides a significant advantage during a dynamic event.

Clark highlights that for DoorBird, integration “is like our DNA” and points to several key partnerships that extend the intercom’s capabilities.

  • SIP Integration: This allows users to embed the intercom’s audio video and control functions directly into a facility’s existing IP-based phone system.
  • VMS Partnerships: Integrations with video-management systems like Digital Watchdog provide a seamless user experience from a central dashboard.
  • Telecor Integration: DoorBird now integrates with Telecor’s console which displays a map of the facility. Users can tap into live video and audio from DoorBird devices directly from the Telecor interface.

Clark also states that DoorBird will continue its focus on the K-12 market and will release significant new features and integrations in the coming months.
