Published: 2022-04-12

LG Business Solutions USA unveiled three models of 4,000-nit high-brightness displays specifically designed for outstanding visibility in window-facing installations. The company is of course, the Lincolnshire, Ill.-based division that serves commercial display customers in a variety of markets. These include hospitality, digital signage, systems integration, healthcare, education, government and industrial markets.

Per the company, the 49-, 55- and 75-inch class models will deliver high visibility and clarity for locations where direct sunlight shines on displays. All three can be integrated in double-sided installations to provide both high-brightness window-facing and standard-brightness interior-facing messaging and visuals. LG also introduced a 21.5-inch 1080p outdoor display with a rugged IP56 rating and 1500-nit brightness.

Addressing Sunlight Challenges

The latest models in the LG XS4 series feature a thin profile, slim bezels and automatic brightness control with ambient light detection. Moreover, LG says the design helps deliver optimal performance in bright and sun-lit environments. It also feature Quarter Wave Plate technology allowing clear visibility when viewed through polarized sunglasses. The largest of the models is the 75-inch class model. it is also LG’s first 4,000-nit display to offer UHD resolution from virtually any viewing distance.

Dan Smith, VP of business development, LG Business Solutions USA, speaks on the reason for the development of the new models. “Some environments require purpose-built digital displays, and there may be no environment more demanding than operating in direct sunlight,” he remarks. Smith then highlights the displays’ ability to produce 4,000 nits of screen brightness. According to him, this enables exterior viewing in direct sunlight. Pointing to additional features, Smith adds, “…[T]hey are also designed to quickly dissipate heat produced by direct sunlight that can damage less-specialized displays.”

Easy Content Management and Delivery

The 49-inch (model 49XS4J-B), 55-inch (model 55XS4J-B) and 75-inch (model 75XS4G-B) displays can be oriented either horizontally or vertically. The company adds that it includes the webOS 4.1 smart signage platform. This helps enable ease-of-use of the display, an internet browser, compatibility with the LG ConnectedCare subscription-based remote management system and the LG ecosystem of third-party applications. The models also come a built-in content management system, system-on-chip, WiFi, Bluetooth and Beacon technologies. Users can thus leverage these capabilities for a variety of use cases.

For multi-display installations, users can set one display as the “master” to control brightness for multiple units. In doing so, it allows all to exhibit the same brightness even when one display’s light sensor is blocked, while others are not. Without this capability, each display adjusts individually. This leads to passing shadows which causes adjacent displays to project noticeably different brightness levels, says LG.

Enhanced Environmental Protection

The XS4 displays also offer enhanced environmental protections over previous models. This is due to a conformal coating that helps prevent water vapor and dust from affecting the electronics inside the display. In addition, the 49XS4J-B features a depth of 3.3 inches and slim bezels measuring 0.26 inches on the short sides, and 0.35 inches (9mm) on the long sides. Meanwhile, model 55XS4J-B features a depth of 3.4 inches and bezels measuring 0.38 inches and 0.47 inches respectively.

Each XS4 model operates in a wide range of temperatures and offers a variety of connectivity options. These include RS-232 in/out, eight ohm audio out, two HDMI 2.2 in, DP 1.3 in/out, DVI-D in, USB-A in, audio in, LAN and an IR & light sensor.

Every XS4 display also features a 600mm x 400mm VESA-compliant mount interface. Moreover, the displays have the ability to attach a second display of varying size to face inside a store. They also come backed by a three-year limited warranty.

Features of Outdoor Display Model

LG says its 22XE1J 21.5-inch 1080p outdoor display is perfect for a variety of outdoor needs. It features a conformal coating to protect against dust and water vapor. It also comes with an IP56 rating. This guarantees long-term performance and reliability in any weather conditions. The display’s smaller size makes it ideal for a wide range of advertising and informational needs with short viewing distances. Some examples include kiosks, service counters, drive-thrus, public transit or any close-quarters environments. It also facilitates wireless content distribution through WiFi, Bluetooth and Beacon.
