The commercial integration landscape often demands audio systems that require specialized engineering, extensive tuning and ongoing on-site maintenance. However, as the lines blur between residential experiences and light-commercial environments, integrators need solutions that deliver high-fidelity sound without the operational friction.

In a recent conversation, Dan Ferrisi, group director of content and editorial industrial and tech at Emerald, sat down with Luke Heckel, commercial sales manager Americas at Sonos. They discussed how the renowned audio manufacturer is leaning into holistic, purpose-built solutions for professional integrators. By prioritizing an intuitive user experience and seamless deployment, Sonos is redefining how audio operates in retail, hospitality, wellness and dining spaces.

In addition, Heckel and Ferrisi discuss Sonos’ strategic shift in the commercial sector, the technology driving its all-in-one hardware and the deep partnerships it continues to build within the dealer channel.

A Niche Approach to Light-Commercial Audio

Sonos is synonymous with residential multi-room audio systems. The company created a new category defined by user-friendly control and premium sound quality. Now, Sonos is taking that exact blueprint and applying it to the commercial market.

Instead of adopting a scattergun approach to conquer massive stadiums or complex enterprise deployments, Sonos focuses intently on light-commercial spaces. These environments — such as boutique retail shops, high-end restaurants and wellness spaces — often lack dedicated audio engineers on staff.

“What we found is that our products were very organically getting into commercial spaces across the residential line,” Heckel says. “We really focused on what are the aspects of our products that are bringing that premium experience and making it really approachable and desirable for the commercial end user.”

By targeting these specific verticals, Sonos delivers a premium listening experience for guests while ensuring a simplified operational experience for business owners.

Versatile All-In-One Hardware Solutions

When analyzing the products that naturally found their way into commercial applications, Sonos noticed a distinct trend: all-in-one devices led the charge. Unlike traditional commercial audio setups that require separate matrix switchers, amplifiers and streaming endpoints, Sonos combines these elements.

Every all-in-one device functions as both the source and the output. This architecture grants integrators virtually limitless matrixing capabilities across an entire system.

To formalize this commercial focus, Sonos introduced a robust, all-in-one PoE speaker designed specifically for professional deployments. This purpose-built hardware allows integrators to easily establish discrete listening areas within a single venue.

For instance, a restaurant deployment might require distinct audio zones for:

  • The main dining room
  • A high-energy bar area
  • The host stand
  • The restrooms

“We have the elegance of being able to create those different listening areas, which is a necessity in the commercial space, but do so with these all-in-one products that are incredibly versatile and really easy to install and to design with,” Heckel explains.

Empowering Dealers With Remote Management

How can integrators ensure seamless control without rolling a truck for every minor client issue? The answer lies in remote monitoring and management.

Sonos separates itself by offering an end-to-end ecosystem that encompasses hardware, control software and commercially licensed music access through Sonos Pro. For business owners, Sonos Pro provides curated channels that accurately represent its brand identity while maintaining legal compliance. For integrators, it offers a powerful backend toolset.

Commercial end users can add their preferred integration partner as an administrator on their Sonos system. This grants the integrator deep visibility into the network. They can see if a device is offline, check what content is currently playing or execute a remote reboot.

“It really gives that business customer the opportunity to add the integrator as an admin on their system,” Heckel says. “It does absolutely give a peace of mind that their preferred partner can get access to their system and help them troubleshoot without it being a painful process.”

Building Synergy With the Builder Community

Beyond hardware and software, Sonos is actively working to eliminate channel friction by fostering relationships with parallel trades. The builder community plays a crucial role in getting audio systems specified early in a project’s lifecycle.

Sonos partners with organizations and home builders to integrate its products into model and spec homes. By engaging buyers with curated background music during walkthroughs, builders can elevate the sensory experience of the home-buying process. Furthermore, this ensures that homes are pre-wired for Sonos systems from day one.

“Everything from sights and smells to of course sounds absolutely impact that purchasing experience and can really create the ambiance and help people envision themselves in those spaces,” Heckel notes.

A Dealer-Centric Support System

Ultimately, Sonos views itself as a dedicated resource for both residential and commercial integrators. The company has structured its professional team to offer direct engagement, guidance and hand-holding for integrators navigating commercial opportunities.

To better support design engineers who require detailed technical specifications, Sonos has also expanded the resources available on its website. While the brand previously relied on the sheer quality of the listening experience to sell products, it now provides the comprehensive technical documentation necessary for complex commercial system design.

By combining reliable all-in-one hardware, intuitive remote management and a dealer-focused mindset, Sonos is equipping professional integrators with the tools they need to deliver outstanding audio experiences across the light-commercial landscape.
