As the pro AV industry reflects on the year 2025, it’s clear that this has been a period of both growth and transformation. To gain deeper insights into the trends, challenges and opportunities that have shaped the industry, Commercial Integrator turned to Rich Ventura, vice president, Sony Electronics Inc., professional display solutions.

Rich Ventura 2025 Reflections

The pro AV industry in 2025 has been a year of contrasts, marked by both unexpected challenges and significant opportunities. While economic headwinds and pricing uncertainties have tested the industry’s resilience, strong sales in key verticals, growth in emerging markets and a surge in innovation have kept momentum high. Collaboration and partnerships, such as Sony’s Alliance Program and the OpenAV initiative, have emerged as critical drivers of progress, fostering innovation and addressing customer needs.

Commercial Integrator: What kind of year has 2025 been for the pro AV industry?

Ventura: 2025 has been an interesting year full of unexpected challenges and opportunities. Overall, we have seen good sales in key vertical markets as well as growth in new markets; interest in pro AV solutions remain strong; collaboration is at an all-time high, and the innovation that continues to be displayed is unparalleled.

At the same time, there are many challenges within the industry due to economic headwinds. These challenges force the industry and our customers to evolve and transform how they do business, where they do business, and what applications and use cases have the largest impact on their organization.

I’m encouraged by the resiliency, focus and thought on critical topics that transcend our space, including sustainability, AI, cloud services and security, and how to use technology to create more meaningful engagement, connections and immersion.

CI: What has been the most surprising development in the pro AV industry this year?

Ventura: Pricing uncertainty and long-term planning resulting from tariffs was a surprising development that the industry couldn’t have foreseen or prepared for. There was a lot of hard work behind the scenes to address tariffs in a manner that supports business needs while minimizing impact on customers.

While managing tariffs was unprecedented, it served as a learning experience and a chance to rethink our manufacturing strategy, logistics and operations. The pressure from these external factors have forced organizations to look at everything from processes, to production, to suppliers and even logistics to reduce the negative impact to the quality and capabilities of delivering the right solution for each project.

Together, we adapt and grow stronger.

CI: What has been the most important change we’ve seen this year in pro AV?

Ventura: The rise in partnerships and the call for open interoperability are critical to helping grow our industry by directly addressing the needs, challenges and requests of our community.

Partnerships, like Sony’s Alliance Program, allow companies to bring their collective strengths, joint resources and combined power together, for the benefit of users. They also foster innovation, present growth opportunities, expand our reach and enable our industry to continue using their preferred tools with greater ease.

With the launch of initiatives like OpenAV, which Sony is a part of, we’re putting end user feedback into action and creating less friction for customers. Promoting openness and compatibility creates more accessibility and provides a powerful and efficient way to do business.

When we all lift one another up, everyone wins.
