In this exclusive interview, Matrox Video executive Catherine Koutsaris explains the latest trends in AV-over-IP technology. Those, of course, include IPMX, which is a standard for the transport and control of compressed and uncompressed video and audio. Koutsaris, who serves as product marketing manager, discusses why IPMX will likely be a big part of our collective future.
At the beginning of the interview, Koutsaris offers a primer on IPMX. She says, “The whole point is to bring operability and standards-based AV-over-IP to the pro AV industry.” It’s based on the broadcast SMPTE 2110 standards, but IPMX adds a bit more of a pro AV flavor, she notes. Explaining some of those key pro AV-friendly benefits, Koutsaris says, “So, you have features like system timing, control features, compressed and uncompressed video [and] audio…. All of it is standards-based, but open standards.” Ideal applications include control rooms, videowalls, live production, etc.
Koutsaris really underlines the benefits of an open standards approach. She says, “You’re not tied to a specific vendor or that vendor’s ecosystem. It creates an open ecosystem, based on open standards, and allows you to pull products and technology from different types of vendors and manufacturers.” Thus, she adds, “[It all comes] together to build your ecosystem, ultimately.”
Next, Koutsaris turns to Matrox Video and its leading role in the drive for AV-over-IP and IPMX. “IPMX is really part of our key philosophy at Matrox,” she declares. Moreover, she notes that IPMX is always a consideration during product design. Matrox Video, therefore, has plenty of products that are IPMX-ready. However, Koutsaris also adds, “We have other products that don’t necessarily have IPMX-ready at the first revision, but very clear roadmaps to add features and add functionality to make them IPMX-ready in the very near future.” Thus, Matrox Video makes it easy to build an AV-over-IP ecosystem that includes not only its own products but also products from third-party vendors.
