When filming an unscripted television show in a remote jungle, equipment failure is not an option. Headroom Productions recently deployed Turtle AV Mineola 8×8 Dante audio bridges to support the production of “Survivor Québec.” Filmed in the remote Pearl Islands of Panama, the production required a highly stable, high-performance Dante audio network. By leveraging Turtle AV’s Mineola platform, the audio team secured flawless recording and routing capabilities throughout the intense production schedule.
The Challenge: Surviving Extreme Production Environments
Producing a major television series in a location defined by intense heat, stifling humidity, corrosive salt air and constant physical movement requires gear that simply will not fail. “Survivor” productions operate far from traditional broadcast facilities. Each daily challenge functions effectively as a temporary outside broadcast setup that the crew must build and dismantle every single day.
Furthermore, filming in the Pearl Islands pushes standard broadcast equipment past its typical limits. Temperatures regularly exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius), ocean tides shift dramatically and crews transport delicate equipment daily by boat. Audio systems must withstand constant handling alongside exposure to sand and moisture.
“Durability and resistance of the equipment is a big concern for us,” said Roxanne, head of audio at Headroom Productions.
The Solution: A Resilient Dante Audio Network
To combat these extreme environmental factors, the Headroom Productions audio team designed a robust system centered around two Turtle AV Mineola 8×8 units connected over Dante. They supported this infrastructure with NETGEAR AV Line switches to form the backbone of the outside broadcast audio network.
The team strategically deployed the hardware across the production footprint:
- Field deployment: One unit operated in a field rack situated close to the active game area. This bridge handled critical program audio feeds, signal distribution to wireless transmitters, boom operator feeds and primary backup recording paths.
- Control room deployment: A second unit operated safely inside the production control room. This device managed audio routing into the broader production system, which included critical intercom communications and network stream adapters.
System configuration and real-time tuning took place through the Mineola WebUI. The browser-based interface allowed the team to manage complex routing without needing external software.
“The WebUI made setting up the audio parameters incredibly straightforward,” Roxanne explained. “When you are working in the field, you need tools that are quick and intuitive. Being able to configure everything through the browser saved us a lot of time during setup.”
The Results: Production-Grade Reliability
In live reality production, there are no second takes. Every dramatic moment must be captured perfectly the first time. The Turtle AV hardware delivered the exact stability the crew required.
Key performance benefits included:
- Zero downtime: Despite the blistering heat and corrosive environment, the hardware performed flawlessly. “Mineola never failed once. It was rock solid and reliable for the entire shoot,” noted Roxanne.
- Thermal management: Low-heat output proved vital for equipment sitting in direct sunlight. The units generated minimal heat, protecting the entire rack from thermal shutdown.
- Compact mobility: The 1U-format chassis saved critical space in transport racks, making daily boat transfers manageable.
- Fail-safe recording: The system provided a secure redundancy point. If wireless systems experienced interference, the team could still record high-quality sound directly through the networked bridges.
The underlying Dante network also performed exceptionally well. Jean-Sebastien Roy, President of Headroom Productions, praised the network backbone. “We’ve been a power user of the NETGEAR AV line for years. They were life changing products for us. NETGEAR AV switches just make everything faster and easier and I simply can’t speak highly enough of them.”
Lessons from Survivor Québec
For Headroom Productions, the strategic combination of Turtle AV Mineola 8×8 units, Dante audio networking and NETGEAR AV Line switches delivered absolute peace of mind. The system provided the durability and high-fidelity routing required to keep a massive reality television production running smoothly day after day.
“We design our products with a focus on reliability,” says Eamon Drew from Turtle AV. “That said, this was a real test for any electronics. We are really pleased to see Mineola perform so consistently in those conditions.”
