Sonance unveiled the VX52R UTL, an ultra-shallow in-ceiling speaker that delivers VX Series performance in applications where depth is critically constrained. Making its world debut at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2026, the new model brings premium audio technology to retrofit projects, historic buildings and commercial spaces where traditional speakers cannot be installed.

With a 1.41-inch (35.7mm) mounting depth, the VX52R UTL addresses one of the architectural audio industry’s most persistent installation challenges: delivering high-fidelity sound in spaces with shallow ceiling cavities, concrete substrates, or structural limitations that prevent standard speaker mounting.

Premium Technology in Limited Space

The VX Ultra Thin-Line incorporates technologies previously reserved for Sonance’s deeper VX Series models:

  • CDX Crossover: Sonance’s proprietary crossover design optimizes driver integration and frequency response accuracy across the audio spectrum
  • VX Sinusoidal Waveguide: Precisely engineered waveguide geometry ensures wide, consistent coverage with minimal off-axis coloration
  • Redesigned Driver Architecture: New 5.25-inch polypropylene woofer and 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter deliver smooth tonal balance and extended frequency response (55Hz-20kHz) despite the compact enclosure

“In-ceiling speaker technology has been holding the industry to a requirement that is only suitable for some ceiling depths,” says Todd Ryan, Sonance chief loudspeaker engineer. “The VX52R UTL presents a breakthrough for architectural speaker design that brings premium performance to shallow construction. We’ve applied our VX Series engineering approach to solve real-world installation problems without sacrificing the sound quality, exactly the kind of solution that dealers and their clients have come to expect from Sonance.”

Solving Retrofit and Commercial Challenges

The VX Ultra Thin-Line was engineered specifically for installations where depth is non-negotiable:

  • Historic Renovation: Preservation projects where ceiling modifications are restricted
  • Commercial Retrofit: Office buildings, hotels, and retail spaces with shallow plenums above drop ceilings
  • Residential Remodel: Condominiums and homes with concrete ceilings or minimal cavity depth
  • Multi-Unit Housing: New construction with fire-rated assemblies and limited plenum access

With an 8-ohm impedance and 89dB sensitivity, the VX52R UTL integrates into distributed audio systems and can be driven by a wide range of amplification platforms. The 8.25-inch (210mm) cutout diameter and included paintable grille (options for Micro Trim, Trimless, or Sonance TRUFIG Flush Mounted) maintain Sonance’s “Designed to Disappear” aesthetic philosophy.

Portfolio Evolution

The VX52R UTL replaces Sonance’s VP Series ultra-thin model, representing a significant performance upgrade for dealers and clients who require shallow-depth solutions. The speaker reflects Sonance’s ongoing commitment to bringing premium technologies across its entire architectural portfolio, ensuring that installation constraints don’t dictate audio quality compromises.

The Sonance VX52R UTL will be demonstrated at ISE 2026, stand 2H500, Feb 3 – 6. The product will be available to authorized Sonance dealers in late Q2. Dealers can contact their Sonance distributor or representative for product specifications, pricing and ordering information.
