For manufacturers competing at the high end of residential audio, product brochures don’t win specifications. You know what does? A listening session. And that’s why demos are a huge part of the CEDIA Expo experience.
That reality drives how Pro Audio Technology and Theory Audio Design operate at the show, and it explains why CEDIA Expo occupies a unique place in their marketing strategy.
A Platform for Reaching North American Resi Integrators
Erin Phillips, vice president at Pro Audio Technology and Theory Audio Design, describes CEDIA Expo as the brands’ primary North American platform for reaching residential integrators, rep firms, consultants and distributors. Attracting 14,000 industry professionals who specify and install premium audio systems, the show is where PRO and Theory launch products, take the pulse of the channel and gather feedback to shape what the engineering teams build next.
But the core reason that PRO and Theory return each year is even simpler: You can’t prove what a system sounds like by scrolling a product page.
CEDIA Expo: The Cornerstone for PRO and Theory
PRO and Theory exhibit at three major events annually: ISE, InfoComm and CEDIA Expo. According to Phillips, “CEDIA Expo is the cornerstone for our residential customer base in North America and the one place we can show and demonstrate our products to a larger audience in that market.”
At the show, she notes, the audience is concentrated and qualified — integrators and specifiers who make decisions on complex, mid-high-budget projects, and who may be difficult to reach anywhere else.
But Phillips also values CEDIA Expo as a structured annual check-in with media members and industry partners, as well as existing and prospective customers. Those conversations aren’t just relationship maintenance, either; in fact, they feed directly into product planning.
“Each year, we gather valuable feedback,” Phillips says, saying it is “…much of which informs the PRO and Theory product roadmaps.”
And make no mistake: That feedback loop matters for integrators, too. The questions they ask on the show floor have a measurable influence on what their supplier partners develop next.
Demos at CEDIA Expo: Don’t Risk Being Left Behind
PRO and Theory’s approach to CEDIA Expo is centered on a single, non-negotiable conviction: In premium audio, the demonstration is the sale.
“You cannot sell premium audio without demonstrating the difference,” Phillips declares. “And our CEO, Paul Hales, is renowned for putting on standout audio demonstrations. Between the shockingly good sound and Paul’s legendary presentations, it’s a worthwhile demo experience for anyone who appreciates good sound and walking away with some new knowledge.”
And that’s not just some marketing posture. Instead, it’s a practical reality for a segment in which integrators are specifying systems that their high-net-worth clients must live with and will judge them by.
That’s why PRO and Theory build their CEDIA Expo presence around in-room listening sessions that give integrators an opportunity for direct, unmediated evaluations that highlight what the systems can actually do.
Phillips is direct about how this strategy pays off and why the investment is worth it, saying, “The ability to demonstrate our systems in-person throughout the show and reignite excitement in current and potential customers is what makes all of the time, energy and expense put into the show worthwhile.”
What Did Integrators Hear at CEDIA Expo Last Year?
At last September’s CEDIA Expo, PRO and Theory leveraged the exhibit floor and a dedicated High-Performance Audio Room to put a substantial product slate in front of qualified ears.
A few launches stood out for their practical implications for custom-home integrators.
On the Theory side, Automator IP expanded the brand’s namesake software to enable deployment of Theory and third-party surround-sound systems (up to 7.1 or 5.1.2) using the eight-channel Theory DLC-250.8 loudspeaker controller, giving installers a tighter, more integrated workflow.
The ic5, Theory’s five-inch in-ceiling loudspeaker, arrived at CEDIA Expo last year with a live demo that addressed the central question integrators bring to any compact loudspeaker: How does it actually sound – especially in comparison to its big brother, the ic6?
The sb210aw all-weather surface-mount loudspeaker made a compelling case for outdoor and surround applications, pairing dual 10-inch carbon fiber woofers with a 6.5-inch coaxial driver in a form factor that, according to Phillips, is extremely high-output and discreet. The ic6 Bollard landscape speakers and iws12 Bollard subwoofers were also front and center in Denver.
Rounding out the Theory lineup, the SR Series — sound-reinforcement loudspeakers and manifold subwoofers built to order in the U.S. — addressed the large private screening room market directly.
The common thread across last year’s CEDIA Expo lineup? Products designed for real-world integration scenarios, demonstrated in conditions that let integrators credibly evaluate real-world performance.
What’s Coming This Year?
PRO and Theory head into CEDIA Expo this September with notable new hardware on both sides of the portfolio.
Pro Audio Technology will bring five loudspeakers updated to Version 2. Phillips says the upgrade combines enhanced transducers with the highest resolution processing in the brand’s more-than-20-year history. The result, she says, is a set of tangible, audible performance improvements across the LFC-24sm 24-inch subwoofer; the SR-28212ai dual 12-inch full-range surround speaker with internal subwoofer; the S-12sm 12-inch multi-use loudspeaker; its shallow SR-12ai counterpart; and the compact SR-8ai eight-inch multi-use loudspeaker.
For integrators specifying around existing room configurations, the Version 2 updates expand what these models can deliver while maintaining the existing form factor.
Meanwhile, Theory’s headline introduction for 2026 is the p9, a nine-inch pendant loudspeaker whose slender package combines lively dynamics, high maximum output and refined acoustic performance. “Unlike most pendant loudspeakers, and in line with the brand’s promise, Theory is raising the performance bar not only in terms of accuracy of the reproduced sound but also in sheer output capability,” Phillips declares.
The brand is also bringing five new loudspeaker controllers to market. These include the DLC-1500.8d, an eight-channel model delivering 6,000 watts with Dante and AES67 from a 2RU chassis, as well as the new PLC Series. These four models, built on Powersoft’s Class-D amplification with advanced DSP, are suitable for complex systems, large venues and live-sound applications.
For integrators whose work branches beyond strictly residential contexts, the controller lineup significantly expands how Theory can support their business.
What Consistent Success at CEDIA Expo Looks Like
If you ask Phillips what consistent success at CEDIA Expo looks like, the answer will come back to the room where the listening happens.
“Whether its current or potential customers, other vendors or the press, we are continuously praised for our stellar demos,” she says with pride. They are “…always the highlights and buzz at the show.” Phillips adds that CEO Paul Hales is often named best presenter at the show by members of the press, further reinforcing the idea of CEDIA Expo as a direct connection point with custom home integration influencers.
Both PRO and Theory see a measurable sales bump following CEDIA Expo each year. According to Phillips, “Theory is a newer brand, so it has been on a fantastic growth trajectory since we previewed the brand in 2018 and began shipping products in 2020. And, as PRO enters its 22nd year in business, business remains strong.”
Demos at CEDIA Expo: Where Top Brands Prove Their Case
In a business long driven by spec sheets and hype, the demo rooms at CEDIA Expo are where top brands prove or lose their case. Pro Audio Technology and Theory Audio Design have built their entire CEDIA Expo presence around that fact.
For integrators attending this September, it’s worth noting that PRO and Theory’s reputation for standout demonstrations wasn’t built on coincidence. It was built on the premise that the most persuasive argument in premium audio is the one that happens when the room goes quiet and the audio plays.
Register now to attend CEDIA Expo this September! Demos at CEDIA Expo will be ongoing throughout the show.
