Editor’s Note: This exclusive case study from Commercial Integrator highlights the power of K-array outdoor audio deployments to dazzle and impress high-end residential clients. Although this particular application is residential in nature, the same capabilities are equally applicable to outdoor commercial projects.

For residential AV integrators whose businesses cater to upper-echelon clients, delivering a sound experience that impresses is no simple task. The ultra-wealthy travel the world, frequent private clubs and have exceedingly high standards for their homes. Joe McNeill, a seasoned technology consultant and integrator, understands this dynamic well.

Having spent more than three decades navigating the evolving landscape of high-end smart homes, McNeill knows what’s required to stop a discerning client in their tracks and make them take notice.

Recently, he has found a single audio manufacturer — K-array — to be uniquely capable of delivering that wow factor.

A Career Built on Elevating Expectations

McNeill’s journey in custom home integration spans roughly 35 years, giving him encyclopedic knowledge of the industry’s ongoing evolution. He entered the field just after college, quickly falling in love with the intersecting worlds of construction, design and audiovisual technology.

“Back 25 [or] 35 years ago, there was a very, very small number of people that were actually spending extra money to do cool stuff from a technology perspective in their home,” McNeill recalls. “That was only reserved for the uber-rich 0.5% of the population.”

Clearly, though, that’s no longer the case.

Over the years, McNeill has adopted a consultative, grassroots approach. He has built his reputation on proactively educating architects and designers, helping them to understand the value of integrating AV technology early. By positioning himself not just as a contractor but, rather, as a technology partner, he has consistently helped design teams seamlessly blend audio and automation technology into world-class residential architecture.

Discovering the Power of K-array for Outdoor Audio

McNeill’s introduction to K-array occurred only a couple of years ago. Serendipitously, a challenging project for a client with an oceanfront property sparked the connection. The client had requested an outdoor audio system that mirrored a high-end nightlife venue’s massive, chest-thumping sound.

Initially, McNeill installed a system featuring a popular, stadium-style audio brand. After one summer of use, however, the client felt underwhelmed. He stated that it wasn’t measuring up to the immersive acoustic environment inside his luxury vehicle, which was powered with a 40-speaker sound system. The client wanted more power, better fidelity and a truly transportive experience.

Right as McNeill began researching alternatives, Mark Boecker from The New York Marketing Team — a trusted manufacturer’s rep firm — visited his office. Boecker suggested K-array, noting that the brand’s line-source speakers were quickly gaining traction in outdoor applications.

Boecker expressed complete confidence that K-array would outperform the stadium-style system that McNeill had installed a year prior. Skeptical but intrigued, McNeill arranged for a live demo on the beach.

“They lit this thing up for me on the beach and I literally was like, ‘Holy cow! That’s unreal,’” McNeill chuckles. He was especially impressed by the audio performance across a vast range of genres, spanning from Yo-Yo Ma to Metallica — and everything in between.

The K-array system passed the initial test easily. However, McNeill knew his demanding client would require a full-scale personal demonstration. He instructed the rep firm to bring maximum firepower to wow the client.

K-array Outdoor Audio Exceeds Client Expectations

For the client demo, McNeill and the team set up the system on the beach, strategically hiding the compact K-array line arrays behind trees and other landscaping elements.

Before anyone heard a single note, the aesthetic difference was already striking.

Whereas the old speakers required large cabinets that hampered the aesthetic, K-array’s footprint was truly discreet and minimalistic. The sound output, however, was anything but small.

“He came outside with his wife,” McNeill says of the client. “We put on some music and, within the first three notes, he [was dazzled].”

McNeill continues, “You know, a guy at that level, it’s hard to get a person like that excited. They travel the world; they go on yachts; they have the best of everything. And here we are, lighting up this K-array system, and he just turns around to his wife [with a look that said], ‘This is next level.’ And then, he said, ‘OK, you got the assignment. I want it! Let’s do it!’”

The client replaced the entire original system with a K-array setup. The final installation included eight speakers and six KU315 subwoofers installed seamlessly across the beachfront, all powered by K-array Kommander amplifiers.

How Does K-array Stand Up to Harsh Environments?

Because of the location of the client’s home, weather resistance was a critical factor. Some K-array subwoofers, such as the KU315, are built to marine-grade standards by default, easily handling salt air and moisture. The KY102 loudspeakers are IP65-rated as standard; meanwhile, a marine-grade coating is available as a custom upgrade for enhanced protection in marine and coastal environments. McNeill’s client opted for the fully coated, marine-grade speakers so that they could remain outside year-round.

Sheer Power of K-array Outdoor Audio Setup

The sheer power of the K-array system came into sharp focus when the client hosted a fundraising event on his beachfront property. They hired a private DJ service that arrived fully prepared to set up their own massive PA system. Instead, McNeill provided audio jacks connected directly to the home’s K-array network.

“I [fired] this system up and these DJs were like, ‘Wow! How are you getting that type of that bass?’” McNeill recalls. The performance genuinely stunned these pro DJs. It’s further proof that K-array bridges the gap between visually unobtrusive residential design and commercial-grade nightclub audio performance.

What is K-array’s Corporate Culture in Italy?

McNeill was so impressed with K-array that it inspired him to travel to K-array’s headquarters in Italy to see how the equipment was engineered. What he found was a corporate culture that underpins and explains the quality of the company’s products.

“When I was in Italy, what I was really struck [by] is every single person I came in contact with at K-array was, like, uber passionate, super smart and just loved — loved — working at the company,” McNeill notes.

That passion radiates throughout the business, extending from meticulous engineering to highly responsive technical support. McNeill summarizes the brand’s identity with two phrases: “Efficiency that amplifies impact” and “The art of doing more with less.”

For ultra-wealthy homeowners with whom McNeill works — those who draw design inspiration from boutique hotels in Paris or architectural flourishes in Milan — K-array offers a level of refinement and craftsmanship that resonates.

McNeill Begins a New Chapter with Intra Home Systems

In just the last few months, McNeill has brought his career’s worth of experience to a new team: Intra Home Systems, LLC. Based in New Jersey, the firm operates throughout the tri-state area, serving high-net-worth clients in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The company, boasting about two dozen associates, has been operating for four-plus decades.

“We are technology consultants,” McNeill explains, but he adds that the company also isn’t afraid to get out into the field and execute. “We design, engineer, install and service all types of low-voltage control systems,” he notes.

Intra Home Systems partners with top-tier architectural design and build firms, acting as those businesses’ technology arm. In short, McNeill says, with his new team — just as with his previous one — he works to ensure that the client’s vision is met flawlessly and with precise technical execution.

Bringing K-array to Intra Home Systems

Now settled in at Intra Home Systems, McNeill is already wasting no time in introducing his team — and their clients — to K-array. He is serving as an evangelist of sorts, taking his new colleagues out into the field to witness the system’s capabilities firsthand.

Recently, McNeill brought a few veteran integrators from Intra Home Systems to a K-array demo. Despite their decades of experience in the AV industry, the seasoned professionals were genuinely blown away that such unobtrusive hardware could deliver that level of audio fidelity and power. McNeill uses these live demonstrations to secure fast, confident client approvals.

By partnering closely with K-array, Intra Home Systems now stands ready to elevate the outdoor spaces of its own clients across the tri-state area.
