Celebrating the 50th anniversary of its famous microphone, Neumann has introduced the U 87 Rhodium Edition microphone.

Explaining the history behind the microphone, Neumann says the mic, “has gained its cherished status thanks to the incredible universality and versatility that has made it a vital part of recording for half a century.”

Wolfgang Fraissinet, president, says the company wanted to do something different to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the company’s most famous products.

To accentuate the product’s form, Neumann chose to use rhodium to finish the microphone.

Neumann states that Rhodium is rarer than gold, and as a material it reflects light more than any other type of metal, which is why telescope manufacturers use rhodium.

Made-to-order, the U 87 Rhodium Edition is a limited edition product, with only 500 units to be made globally. The company says that each U 87 Rhodium Edition microphone will be numbered and accompanied by a hand-signed certificate from Fraissinet.

The U 87 Rhodium Edition features a three-position polar pattern option (cardioid, omni-directional and figure-eight), as well as a switchable high-pass filter and 10dB pre-attenuation pad.

The company adds that it will start taking orders for the U 87 Rhodium Edition this month, and it ships with a Neumann aluminum case and “special Rhodium Edition” EA 87 elastic suspension.

Helping to maintain the product’s appearance, Neumman also includes a pair of black gloves to protect users’ investment into its limited edition 50th anniversary microphone.
