The L.A.-based production studio Therapy Studios works with a ‘who’s who’ of the television and marketing industries to deliver some of the best production values the pro audio industry has to offer.
Working with one of the world’s most notorious and famous audiophiles, the California studio helped create the sound for one of the most highly anticipated music projects to hit the market this year when it participated in the 5.1 mix for the Foo Fighters’ “Sonic Highways” HBO documentary.
Using the newly renovated facilities’ Genelec 8040B Bi-Amplified Monitors,Therapy Studios’ Jeff Fuller and Eddie Kim, cited the active speaker’s contribution to the critically acclaimed music and documentary project.
“Dave [Grohl] is naturally concerned with the quality of the audio for ‘Sonic Highways,’ as we are for every project we do,” notes Fuller. “The Genelecs sound great. What I really like about them is the level of accuracy I get. I can hear everything clearly, perfectly … accurately.”
Looking at the genesis of the “Sonic Highways” project, Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters selected several well-known cities throughout the U.S. based on these communities’ respective music histories and traveled to these locations to write and record songs that are representative of each area.
Stops included Steve Albini’s “Electrical Audio” studio in Chicago, Rancho De La Luna in California, Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, and Inner Ear Studios in Washington D.C.
Fuller points out that one of the ways the new Genelecs were able to help him throughout the mixing process was in hearing the tonal differences between each recording.
“We couldn’t be happier with the performance of the 8040Bs,” he boasts. “I’ve been using Genelec monitors for a long time—they’re the industry standard for audio post production—and the 8040Bs surpassed my high expectations. The sound is great, but as important, they are not fatiguing to work on for long stretches. That’s good because with this show and all the other work we’re doing, I’m in the studio six days a week, heavy-duty hours each day. The 8040Bs are everything you’d want in a monitor for music and for television.”
