Warner Bros. Adopts Hybrid Film Distribution Approach for 2021

Published: 2020-12-04

The cinema technology industry was dealt another blow this week as Warner Bros. said they plan on releasing its entire 2021 slate of films in both theaters and on streaming service HBO Max at the same time.

The Hollywood giant’s move comes as the theater industry continue to reel in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on indoor gatherings, prompting some cinema groups to close locations.

In the announcement, Warner Bros. cited the ongoing pandemic as the main factor in releasing films via this “hybrid model” for at least 2021.

After one month of HBO Max access domestically, each film will leave the platform and remain in theaters in the U.S. and international territories with customary distribution windows applying to the title, according to Warner Bros.

In a statement, Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO of WarnerMedia Studios and network Groups, said the pandemic calls for a creative solution and distribution model.

“No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021,” Sarnoff said.

“With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films. We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.”

Regal Cinemas in October announced that the theater group would be closing all of its 536 locations in The U.S., and AMC Entertainment is also struggling and could run out of cash in the next few months.

With the theater business struggling, one area that has seen growth is outdoor venues like drive-in movie theaters, some of which are being used as concert venues for touring musicians, comedians and other performers.

These venues represent safe alternatives and an entertaining experience for end customers.

If COVID-19 has a lasting impact on the indoor theater industry, consider looking into the needs of drive-in theater operators.
