Videoconferencing, having gained widespread prominence across the global landscape due to the deadly COVID-19 outbreak, is emerging as an increasingly attractive prospect across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. Asian countries have been established as major hubs for video teleconference service providers, propelled by the increasing feasibility of digital services. A research report by Global Market Insights Inc. suggests that the APAC videoconferencing market is poised to experience a CAGR of 26% through 2027.

Countries such as the Philippines, Singapore and India have been functioning as major regional contenders over the past years. This is particularly influenced by the rapid adoption of digital-transformation strategies in light of the COVID-19 health emergency.

Another factor driving the growth of the videoconferencing industry is the implementation of progressive initiatives to boost internet access in the region. For example, in 2020, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in the Philippines announced plans to install more than 12,000 internet sites across public-education institutions under the Free Wi-Fi for All Program. This is just one of many moves to strengthen its position as a key market for videoconferencing software.

With remote working and learning set to continue experiencing an upward trajectory, organizations and government bodies are rapidly stepping up their digital-transformation projects to boost productivity and ensure business agility.

Singapore has also been touted as a gold standard in Asia in terms of technological advancements, as well as in terms of its digital-transformation initiatives. When COVID-19 impacted the country, the government allocated more than $365 million to aid local businesses and Singaporeans in driving digital transformation, thereby propelling the regional videoconferencing industry over the years ahead.

Rising Popularity of Online Education Spurs Demand

In India, the end-to-end testing of 5G networks has garnered interest from government departments for applications across a range of sectors, such as education, health and IoT. In December 2021, for example, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) confirmed the rollout of 5G in the country by this year. The department noted that 13 cities will initially be given access to the network, including Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata and Pune.

The escalating trials of 5G and its low-latency network are expected to transform videoconferencing in business communication worldwide. Over the years, video-communication solutions are also being considered a cost-effective means for businesses to promote collaboration.

To that end, in September 2020, India-based Vu Group unveiled a videoconferencing solution known as Meeting by Vu, designed for enterprise and business owners. This audio-video collaborative solution provides traditional room-based solutions, along with the flexibility to use videoconferencing software like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Cisco Webex and other software that runs on Windows 10.

India is a Lucrative Prospect Within APAC

In addition, the exponential growth of online education is also a key factor responsible for positioning the country as a lucrative prospect within the APAC videoconferencing industry. Over a period of 12 months, Coursera, for instance, witnessed a 49% increase in student numbers in the country. This underscores the burgeoning demand for online higher education. As of the end of June 2021, its overall course enrollments stood at 24.6 million. This supports the idea that India is on a path to emerge as a sought-after destination for videoconferencing software developers.

Beyond higher education, the online-course provider also observed growth in its Coursera for Business arm in the region. Indeed, it is collaborating with eight state governments for the workforce-recovery offering.

With more and more organizations making a switch to remote working, the videoconferencing market is set to experience exponential growth in APAC over the years ahead.
